This weeks review of site performance and backup systems has established that we should add additional hard drives to increase redundancy and improve performance.

This will occur first on the spare server which isn't where it is really needed, but will provide a relatively painless dry run of the procedure.

It will then occur on the main server. This will of course involve downtime.

We are talking mid USA so i figure that is 7am ish. Have not checked as there is not a lot of point worrying about it. This is only effecting a few people currently as it is not the main server.

The same upgrade will occur on the main server and will effect most sites, so in that case we will post warning on all forums and actually figure out the time.

The upgrade did occur this morning, and a valuable lesson has been learnt

The good news is that the server is noticable faster

The bad news is that the upgrade has been done stupidly

We lease servers and pay for system admin support. Whilst we have vast amounts of unix system administration experience in house, we regard the job as somthing better done by people who do nothing else. It takes weight off us and provides our customers with better security. By and large the competance shown has been execellent.

Hence on this upgrade I told them in general terms what to do, and did not spell out that there were two ways to do the job, the lazy way and the intelligent way. So no prizes for guessing what happened

In practical terms no problems will occur as a result of this. But it does offend my sense of tidyness.

So I will now order the main site upgrade, and give far more explicet instructions.
