Well the thing we were trying to improve is better by a factor of about 50%, but I was looking for more like 500%. Given this is just one aspect of the overall speed it does mean the net change is unlikely to be very large. Pretty technical stuff dealing with mysql server variables. Essentially trying to get more work happening in memory rather than on disk.

It's true to say we are not exactly in the thros of crisis management here

Hence I have actually put off looking at these figures for a few weeks. But the figures being tweaked are the key ones, and despite the fact that things are fast, they still are pretty appalling on paper.

Have tweaked again. But I think it may be that the nature of a forums based server which inevitably has a fantastic number of databases and tables probably means that certain performance ideals can never be achieved. In the end a tweaking server can be like making a sheet longer, by cutting one end off and sewing it on the other It is a finite resource and giving in this case the database server more to play with, will limit file caching or something else. _________________ Family Friendly Shareware \| \| Web Design/Services \| Free Forums forum.myfreeforum.org
