Yesterday we saw some instances of the forums slowing below acceptable speeds.
We are committed to fast forums and have spare capacity already waiting in the wings
But we are also committed to the forums system being profitable and hence sustainable. As such we'd rather tune the existing system to deal with the load, than simply throw extra hardware/money at the problem.
The upshot of this, is we need to study things when they are a bit on the slow side to see if memory, disk speed or cpu is the bottleneck.
Please be patient whilst this happens, and please resist the temptation to hit refresh if things get a bit slow. As that only increases speed issues and skews the information we need to study.

As an update on this, we have identified cpu as the bottleneck, and realised that for the time being investing in a product called "Zend platform" will almost certainly be a more useful solution than extra servers at the moment.
Zend platform is in fact now running on one test server, another test server will have it installed later, and then Saturday morning it will be done for real. _________________

So should we expect our forums to be faster? :P

How often are you saying you think they could be faster?
As I'm typing this, the system is rocketing along
We have noticed some instances where a slow down has occured, hence we are making upgrades.
How often would you say you see a speed problem? _________________

If i am being honest, there hasn't been any problems with the speed of the forum.
But I hope that doesn't stop you upgrading.

We had a few speed issues at the start , which were resolved by upgrades and tuning.
We have had a glitch or three when a forum has been attacked, but I can only think of one time where I have seen a speed issue that seemed to be simply load related.
However the monitoring since then has indicated that we are at least nearing the point where step will need taking. Hence we are taking steps.... _________________

A sad fact of life for any forum no pint in going into detail though. Writing a list of such things would do no good at all. _________________

Well we are "upgraded". But I have a bad feeling on tests so far
It may be we will have to remove this "upgrade" and return to plan A. _________________

With some more configuration and testing, things are looking a lot more positive
Which is good as making cost effective upgrades helps keep the service viable and the advertising we must use reasonable. _________________

In another bit of good news, we have identified what looks like a nasty bottleneck on the system that is curable Though giving the way the forums are speeding along at the moment you would not suspect there were any issues.
We will leave this until Saturday to fix though, as it is important to make non critical changes at a slow disciplined pace. _________________
