I still need to play with network cards and switches to get the setup "real", but I have now got Ctirix Xen Server running on a new Dell box and being managed by XenCenter which itself is running on a virtual windows XP machine under Ubuntu

On the Server machine I have a copy of Debian Sarge running.

The challenge is to get the system looking as it would look as if this was the planned new forums server and to set up forums on it.

No, all our servers are Linux based.

Slowly getting to know the interface, it's a hell of a lot less scary playing with a 400 box with nothing of value on it, than playing with a 10,000 box that is costing an additional load of money in colocation charges and hence needs to be made to earn a living in a hurry!

There may well be a way round it, but I found a problem with the hardware, a network card was not recognized as it was not seated properly. Nothing I could do in the interface, or even a "refresh" install could then get the thing noticed

A complete reinstall worked.

I am finding a few things like that, where if you do it wrong, the steps to correct it are very painful.

Just a shame they don't tweak their mac os for windows games and offer it resale, I'd actually be willing to part money for their os.

Now doing the hard slog of completely reading the manuals.

It is demystifying a lot of the "clever" features. For example the so called vmmotion that allows a virtual machine to switch hosts without anyone noticing is locked into using shared storage, making it still clever but rather more explainable.

In fact a lot of the clever stuff is orientated around shared storage, like sparse virtual disks that exist on shared nfs storage only using the space that is actually used on the disk and not its configured physical size.

I tend to think that such tricks might be rather useful if you want to rent out loads of virtual machines, and also is useful for certain types of backups. e.g. If you have a virtual disk that just looks like a 20gb file, then you can suspend the machine and copy that file in virtually no time. The trouble with that sort backup though is that it lacks some forms of integrity. e.g. if the virtual disk is corrupt then you are copying corruption and you won't know it.

All food for thought.

Going to look at the 5.5 beta instead, that seems like the one that will be on general release when we go live.

Already I see there will be some common sense steps like partitioning the operating system of the virtual machines from the database and forums code.

Not really had time to work much more on this today.

But it does seem to click into place that with a clear separation between the host operating system and the forums data, we can do an entire upgrade to an operating system whilst a forum is running on another machine, then simply shut one machine down and start the new one up. This would be handy for all sorts of reasons.

I think I may create a whole virtual world in the office.

e.g. not just virtual servers for the forums, but virtual servers pretending to be the internet and the end user. That way every bit of the network complexities can be worked through. For example if we have a virtual server we can see as address 1.2.3.4 on the internet and we want to let a new virtual server take over its role, it also has to be given the address 1.2.3.4 somehow or other we need to be able to see new and old servers perhaps by having a pool of spare addresses perhaps over private interfaces...

The office stuff will never host real forums, performance questions can only be measured with a real loading of forums and will have to wait for real world testing. What is important is getting fluent in the virtual machine technology. All tech is a balance, take formula 1 as an example! If the goal is to cover the mileage efficiently then F1 fails badly, it may take one man round the track at high speed, but it is at lunatic cost, much better to just run some buses  Wink
Our servers are a similar proposition, they can be souped up in various ways, but if you need an army of mechanics at the pit-stops to keep them working in that mode, then it is no real gain.
We do actually run servers that are somewhat souped up, but only in what I would call sane ways.

Another major decision made.

The pretend network of servers is going to be based on Dr Who

Jack - The pretend "office".
K9 - The ISP/Internet
Doctor - The controlling server
Rose/Martha/Donna - forums servers
