That is a nice simple question

The answer would fill a short book. But to summarise there are utilities out there that show you how competitive keywords are.

So far example if you run a Star Wars site, you could target the keywords "Star Wars" and maybe you would finally appear on about page 50 of google results

So basically no chance! However you can choose to find a niche, you might not be able to target people doing a search for "star wars" but with a following wind if you concentrated on building a site around "star wars luke skywalker" then you might be able to get your site on the first page.

Maybe only 1% of people looking for star wars will type in Luke Skywalker as well, but you are at least grabbing 1% of the market, as opposed the 0% you get if you are stuck on page 50!
