So, I've moved 99.99% to Ubuntu Hardy Heron. (And I am loving it!)

That pesky 00.01% is accounted for by Windows XP running in a virtual machine for Photoshop CS3.

You might be surprised by what open source has to offer.

Obviously I'm on Linux, but pretty independently my son is on Linux on notebook and PC apart from games.

If you can beat the initial hurdles it has a lot going for it, and is improving all the time.

This is very true.

I've tried to get my dad on Linux, but for some reason he thinks it's a virus or something

Can't disagree with that.

If it weren't for Photoshop being a Windows-based application, I would be full-on Linux. (That and the fact I couldn't get it to install via WINE, and I was to annoyed to try to get it to work.   )

I'm still ironically proud of being a list contributer to Wine and it runs my code constantly as my code is central to it   actually my contribution was a line of code, but what the heck, it was still a central one

I use a mix of some smaller programs that are windows based... I suppose though you're right, get past the initial hurdles.  I plan on upgrading my ancient computer soon, I suppose Linux might be an option there.

There are different versions you could get, right? Like different company's takes on it, or so?  If so, what would you suggest?

Puppy Linux for old comps, Ubuntu for new.
I found a version of Ubuntu called "Ubuntu Studios' which is geared towards music, graphics, and video. I hope to try it out soon.

Ubuntu is flavor of the month, I made the switch with a Fedora distro, but last year switched to Ubuntu.

The thing about open source is that it is open and if a project loses its way you can move on.

Hopefully though Unbuntu has the momentum to be the in thing for a long time.

Just had a really bad experience   I was about to do a dual boot using Ubuntu Studio has the secondary OS and even though I didn't go for it, Gusty Gibs live CD just partitioned my HDD even though I clicked cancel before verifying it could do so

Why did you ditch fedora?

Right now I am on Ubuntu Studio, accidentally deleted my windows partition   So far I got it to my liking. Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 use to give me windows error with I played it on XP. On linux, not a single error.

As I recall I installed Fedora and ran one of my basic tests which is to see if Samba works without fiddling with it too much. Fedora failed and so I went Ubuntu.

I do think being able to see the windows network without applied geekyness is an essential in a decent Linux desktop.

I would switch to Linux, but as im a big gamer, i would be using windows mostly anyway.

I was enquiring into getitng a server machine setup, that would run Linux and be used for running games, but its just an idea atm.

I still have Linux Suse on my pc, dual boot, but i havnt used it for months

Especially what do you use for FTP? Gftp and Filezilla have been buggy on me

I can't recall the last time I used a GUI ftp client. For downloads everything is generally via a web page link and so firefox does it for me.

For odd transfers on servers the file manager does the trick.

For the rest of it which is my main ftp use, the command line ftp and the ncftp programs are what I use. I don't use them directly I have layers of script. e.g. a script that will say deploy a set of ranks to the forums and create the text for posting in the ranks thread.

I don't use many programs at all, crossvc, gedit, gimp, openoffice, thunderbird, firefox, konquerer.
