|
|
You may have noticed in the last few days that you no longer get email "bounce" messages in your inbox. This is because we have been working on a new system of dealing with this issue.
Firstly though a reminder about the messages, since I know people are frequently confused by them, and indeed may have blocked them.
When an email is sent by the forum to a member, such as a private message notification, it will sometimes fail due to a problem with the email address. The fact has to get transmitted back to somewhere so that something can be done about it, this is a standard part of the email protocol, an address should be supplied for a "Return-path".
A message end up being sent to the return-path which was previously set to the forums admin address, and forum admins really should have been looking at these messages and dealing with the members email. In the real world this did not happen much and admins regard the emails as a bit of a pain, not least as the emails tend to be quite complex.
Anyhow the new EMAILBOUNCE portal replaces that system with a new system where the return-path goes to a myff address, and this address is automatically read once a day to compile an individual report to each forum of bouncing email addresses, and emailing the admin with this report (if any bounces have happened). More importantly the member will get a private message, and their email address will be disabled until they update their profile.
The portal can be configured to restore the old bounce behavior, and even to not get the report sent to the admin.

I take it this will not be on PHPBB3 forums as of yet ?
PHPBB3 does have
Return e-mail address:
This will be used as the return address on all e-mails, the technical contact e-mail address. It will always be used as the Return-Path and Sender address in e-mails.
In the client settings, so what would we put in their , and if we did, would we still recieve the daily reports ?
By way a short guide for PHPBb2 has been made. (will put screen shots of bounced emails up when i get some)

One thing the new bounce code has uncovered is a few dozen forums where the bounce report bounces as the board email address is itself bouncing.
The system does not currently do anything about this, and I am aware some people did disable the board email address as they were annoyed by the old bounce messages.
Should I :
1) Ignore it, it is a small problem, and whilst those admins may never cotton on to the new feature it is not a big deal.
2) Send bounce reports to the email addresses of all the admins.
3) Send the bounce report as a pm to all of the admins. _________________

If it is feasable, I think the best bet would be to PM the bouncing admins as a one off to tell them of the new system, so they can then make a decision as whether or not to put their real email in. _________________ Request computer artwork for all your needs

Might be an idea, would probably need to be a weekly or monthly PM though, as a "one off" mechanism would be a problem to be reset.
Now that you can turn off the report feature and not see bounces, is there any good/legit reason for the board address to be wrong? _________________

No, in fact I'd like the PM as some of my forums have the real email and some don't, forgot which _________________ Request computer artwork for all your needs

I'm not very technical so please excuse me if this has already been answered.
On checking my Sentbox just now I find a PM I didn't remember sending, it turns out to be in regard to a bouncing e-mail address. Please can you tell me if these PM's are being automatically generated to come from forum admin? _________________ http://holidaychat.myfreeforum.org.

Hi
If a user responds to the PM by changing their email address in their profile, does this render the account inactive if user activation is set?
I've noticed in logs actions a user (not mod or admin) has a log stating Emailchange_setinactive
Will the user be sent another activation email?
