PostPosted: Wed May 09, 2012 11:27 pm    Post subject: phpbb2: Post thanks system  Reply with quote

This has been vaguely requested any number of times, only to fall down dead when I have tried to ask people more specifically what they want

Whatever they wanted, it has always plainly fallen outside of what is easy to do using our portal system, so again it has always been something that needed more consideration.

Because of the way such a system would have to work it would also clearly mean additional load of the servers

We have not spent all these years creating a stable forums system by going off and doing every vague add on that might be wanted by a few people, who have never seemed to clearly know what they want, and in the process wrecking the speed of the forums.

I was looking at a forum with a thanks system this evening though, and I think it could be done with one additional field to the posts table containing a count of the number of people thanking that post, plus another table relating the post, the poster, and the user being thanked. This other table would only be accessed when adding thanks.

A portal would then be used to relate post thanks to user "kudos" (e.g. how many times they have been given thanks for a post) via a custom profile field.

In terms of hurting the system this would be minimal, and I think it would be a nice feature.

I have never not wanted a thanks system, I just wanted one that I understood and which would not be a system killer.

I will however await any feedback people have before going for this.

Thanks for that

^^^^

Not sure what's so hard about this, so I don't think it is about actually thanking the person.

Perhaps people would like to acknowledge a good post without cluttering a thread up with a quote and a "+1" which can be seen in a lot of threads.  This would make more sense to me.

"This posts has been liked by 9 users, disliked by 2 users" sort of thing, or a thumbs up, thumbs down a la youtube videos.  Makes more sense.

That is kind of the second question which I left unasked, how many counters?

One is obviously easiest, if we have like and dislike we have two.

I think it would be excellent to have a 'Like' button. Dare I say it, just like facebook

On facebook I have often wanted a 'Dis-like' one. Should there be one or should you just remain quiet?

I think both buttons would be best.

Something I was asked for some time ago was a user feedback system like ebay. Can the Karma system be used for that or is it different?

Sort of the same but not applying directly to a specific post ...

Karma handles that reasonable well. But lets not confuse this thread with other issues.

I think it would be great to have a 'Like' button on each post, even better to have an 'dis-like' as well if not too much more overhead.

I think if it did go down this route, then a 'most popular posts' portal would probably be wanted.
I don't think it is a terrible idea, it would I think be well received across the community.

A few portals could be done around this.

I'm kind of inclined to give people two "counts" to play with. e.g. so they could have:

likes/disliked
most useful/funniest

But they would have to make that choice.

if done via the portal system like other mods, should be useable on both, but I wouldn't quote me, as the extra/custom profile fields maybe different, so the portal may have to look for both formats.

I'm doing the database for this now, and it seems a very small step to assign a number to the count, e.g. so you can award a post 5 stars or whatever.
I think that fits in with our general view that we should make this flexible. It has been a long time coming, so it would be a shame to mess it up. The key point is not to be cheapskate where the addition is not going to impact forum speed when viewing topics.

This is also going to work on a numeric basis.

e.g. for now we have customcount1 countcount2 fields on the post record and customcount1 and customcount2 records.

This way we can had 3,4..N without effort.

database done and a little bit of the code written.

This is going to be a "web2.0" affair e.g. click a button see a result, just like that

I am really looking forward to coding this one in.
