Things have been a bit too crowded this week to get to the 2nd stage of updating the DNS system, but it is getting urgent as the main server is feeling too busy.
So the current plan is for stage 2 to be carried out Sunday. But with some manual work on reducing load to begin tomorrow. _________________

Sitting here somewhat dry mouthed at the tension, but MkIII of the forum system (or something like that) is installed, and forums can still be created
The system is now trawling through all the forums to create the DNS database, which can then be tested compatively with the existing nameservers. If all goes well we can then switch over to our own nameservers with the existing ones as backup.
Unconventionally the backups will not be slave zones of our new master server, but will instead contain a minimal set of fallback records.
Thus in the event of our own nameservers either failing or being corrupted, an entirely independant system can be kicked in.
The only effect of this will be that addresses will if you are not on the main server change to something like:
theghosthousegang.zaphod.myfreeforum.org
But you will still be able to use the address:
theghosthousegang.myfreeforum.org
as the system will redirect you.
It all should be more efficient, and more reliable. _________________

Am just running through another update after seeing and fixing a few issues the first time round, but it looks like there is little left to do than push the final button and hope _________________

Well first the good news. It does all seem to have worked. A site I shifted for test purposes, started off with the zaphod bit and has now got back to normal.
One site holidaychat was seemingly missed in the process of updating all the forums that are on Zaphod, and hence fell back to having zaphod in the title until that was manually fixed.
Speed wise things will have taken a temporary hit on a couple of levels. Firstly growth means we are again nearing capacity on the main server, secondly the fallback to zaphod means that a lot of site accesses would have been access via a redirect on the main server. Hence whereever your forum is, unless it had properly propagated a hit would be suffered.
I seems to me speed is a bit better now, but we do need to start swapping some forums over to balance the load. _________________

The speed seems fine to me... now that other place is getting slower and slower and slower. I think it is also becoming very unstable. I've had a few errors over there. He can shove his £80 up his nose for a forum export. The girls won't pay and don't know what else is hosted over there. I'd love to move them but there is no way... _________________

Speed may be ok, but we are hitting problems, the main nameserver server has fallen flat on its face, and the secondary seems to be struggling
This really should not be happening
I think we may have little choice but to pay more and get a "real" dedicated server for this task. Lycos are just too lame and no visible support. _________________

With a little emergency surgery I think things are back relatively stable i'm certainly hoping so. The aim is to build a system with levels of failsafe, and to some dgree that proved itself today But if we can avoid going totally overboard cost wise then that is also pretty important! _________________

well we now have a situation where all the Lycos servers are doing is acting as nameservers. I have relocated some other reporting stuff.
Currently I am a bit tied up with Marsjupiter work (the bills do need to be paid!) but also trying to further test forum transfers with an eye on reducing the time "zaphod" shows for. _________________

I am starting to move a lot of forums to even up the server load. It could be a bit of an effort to actually keep up with growth.
But I have some ideas on that.
