With the optional hacks in and working and proving a very useful hack for the promotation of boards, as well as another practical example of its use, we will be switching the emphasis away from visible enhancements for sometime.

We will start next week with a review of server backup procedures and code. The backup at the moment is fine for the single server, but needs to be extended to cover multiple servers. Hence we may as well throw in some checking of the procedures, recovering a current backup to a test server etc.

Following on from this the new server will go live, with the transfer of test and volenteer forums. This on reflection is going to involve additional coding of safety/housekeeping procedures.

Part of the housekeeping along with the upcoming inactive forum cull will help us gauge the timing of a day where we will be offline for a few hours. The current servers paritions were not sized ideally, and we will face a disk full problem in a matter of months unless we deal with things.

The phase after this will be the template editing system. I'd hope this will be timed as an Xmas present for out users, though maybe a late one, as we want a quiet Xmas support wise!

So please enjoy all the toys you have now in anticipation of more in the new year.

Forums that have volenteered for the server switch will go offline briefly at a prearranged time, maybe late next week, or early the week after.

The BIG offline time, of maybe a few hours could be as far away as 3 months. That might seem too distant to worry about But we have to plan it all the same. Essentially it will be an internal "drama" but as it will be planned not a "crisis".

The UK has culture
The USA doesn't

Sorry, that is wrong: The UK has history
the USA has habits

Work on backups is mostly completed. A restore will be the last thing to check and will be used to duplicate the forums setup on the new servers.

Code to detect and kill "orphans" is now operational on the test server. This cleans the databases removing "orphaned" data.

A certain amount of redundant data is clogging up the system, as in the early days it was more important to work on getting forums running, than to work through all the risks in deletion.

This view applies to the moving of forums to the new server, the data will be copied, but an orphan will be left behind, providing another layer of security until moves are totally field tested.

Even the deletion of "orphans" results in an export of the "orphan" data, and is also locked against more than a few deletions at a time. The code is also written so it can run in "dry run" mode where it will see what it thinks it should do, but not do it.

So we have multiple levels of failsafe. The system is tested on test servers, can be dry run on the live servers, backs up data it deletes and guards against mass deletion, allowing any problems to be seen and dealt with on a small scale.

The need to update to the latest security on a dozen of so web sites, has made a bit of a mockery of planned progress for today

So tomorrows plan is to get the forums system up to scratch on the new server and to start transferring test forums.

May be not a minute before time, as we seem to have taken another leap in server load in the last few days.

What is quite good though is that we seem to be bending but not breaking under the load. when we get in the swing of the server mood, we should be able to take 2-3% of the load off each day, compared to a load that is going up by possibly 0.5% a day.

But if it keeps "bending" then it may evemtually "break", right?

Yes of course!

Things are already going a little too slowly when gauged against our commitment to speed.

For this reason we have had for a long time capacity "waiting in the wings". If things had ever "broken" then there never would have been a long outage. It would always have been manually possible to transfer a few busy forums ot the new server.

As it stands now, we are in priniciple a restart of a service away from being able to swiftly transfer forums with a click of a mouse. It has all been retested on test servers and a few tweaks made to the procedure.

Some forums are lined up as crash test dummies (sorry i mean brave volenteers ) for being the first real forums for transfer.

You have to realise we have very good reason for taking the system to within site of breaking point and trying to "tune" it back from the edge. We want to make money, you want forums without loads of adverts, this means getting the most we can reasonably get from our hardware.

I figure on going to live testing tomorrow morning uk time, as this is the quietest time. In prinicple your forums are totally isolated from anything to do with forum creation/maintenance unless of course you are the subject of one of these operations. But we prefer to take the most cautious approach we can think of, whilst still being able to make progress.

Once we have the transfers underway and feel we have tuned as much as we reasonably can, then further transfers will take place to make the forums faster than they are at the moment.

Well after a few tweaks a test forum has been transferred to the new server

http://mydown.myfreeforum.org/

Is an example. If you click on it now, the address will mutate to:

http://mydown.zaphod.myfreeforum.org

But in a few hours the DNS should propagare leaving it intact.

There is still undeniably a lot of testing that needs doing here, before trying a live forum. I think I may make this forum the first real live one.
