We have emailed all inactive forums and have begun a cull of people who have responded and asked for deletion. As well as marking peoples forums against deletion if that is what they ask.

All forums are being internally exported in the state they are at the point of deletion. So as to provide additional protection against error.

A quite staggering number of people are replying saying their forums which have pretty much no posts and no members is in fact being used

We'll keep them of course, but I can't help but wonder just what the heck people use an empty forum for

No one wants to lose something that is free, even if they do not use it. They feel that they always MIGHT POSSIBLY use it somewhere down the road, so they want to hang on to it.

At least, this is my theory.

If you ask a person whether they would like to give up something which is free, if it is never used, they will protest and say that it IS IN USE. And why not? This is the most conservative approach for them. If you accept their story that it is being used, then the will not lose anything. If you refuse to accept their story and delete the forum, well, they had nothing to lose by trying.

There is an old Woody Allen movie, where he is in an art gallery looking at an abstract painting, and a beautiful woman is standing next to him. He makes some remark to her about the painting, and she cordially answers. Then, he makes his move and says, "What are you doing Saturday night?" She answers, "I am commiting suicide". Woody things for a moment, looking slightly puzzled, and then say, "Well, what are you doing tonigh?"

You see, Woody has nothing to lose by trying.

I did find one forum: 2 members 0 posts... that isn't being used!

In the T&Cs it might be worth stating that 'Unused forums will be in the opinion of the forum management and at their discretion"
As you said "There are some good names that people could use"

They create two accounts, and pm one with reminders from the other, or at least that is what one person I know does.

Good point. I will add a check in for that. A forum is there to be used as a forum....

It is the sort of thing that makes your fingers get twitchy near the forum delete key But with great restraint I have emailed them the address of their forum
