No problem admin...

I was sent the link to this post as the installation guide in the email with the export, so assumed this to be the official main guide. You might want to either update the link in the email or put a link in this thread to the main guide then.

I am having trouble with the export that was emailed to me.

The SQL dump was fine, although it looks like just a bunch of gibberish so I am not sure what to do with it yet. It is 25 MB

However, when I got the web pages file, it was empty except for a folder that said "Images". there is also nothing in that folder.

I also got the avatar file, but it is a tar-1 file that is only 10 KB.

The forum in question is http://abdlstoryforum.myfastforum.org

Your site had no web pages or templates. You have what is essential which is the sql dump.

Hope this doesn`t sound to stoopid but....

What will the export contain?
All the users and avatars i take it.

But not all the posts?

So essentially,if we import we`ll have a new forum with all the members but not all the topics and posts.

Personally myff works brilliant for us theres never any downtime and everything works quickly.
We`d just like add things like an integrated chatroom where you have to log into it with your details from the forum and have our calendar viewable without having to click into a thread saying calendar then click the link to the html page

Edit to ask does THIS  seem a suitable host?

You will get the users/posts/avatars/templates.

No idea on the hosts, with so many of them the longer the tick list and lower the price, the more intent they are on screwing you over if you actually try and use the facilities

One more thing, if we are really going to lose a solid forum like yours over the lack of those features, then I'm liable to strongly consider adding them!

With all due respect, I wouldn't go near that choice of hosts, only two options, with the only extra for that 4pm you get two extra domains, btw that's 48 a year extra for two domains you may not end up using, even if you did, you'd get both domains at a lower price anyway, making that host in truth only having one option for web hosting which in itself is somewhat of a joke, as I can pretty much guarantee that their unlimited space and bandwidth will eventually have limitations, because there is now way, that a host would allow one site to fill up a single hd on their server or they force you to a dedicated server package which can hit 69 plus per month.

Also noticed on leaving their site, they try and retain your attention with a chat link popup to a member of their staff, with a generated msg, if I were looking they'd already lost me with their package options, then I'm forced to sit there longer, with a view to be enticed into a deal that doesn't exist thanks to the options with their essentially only package having all they can offer. Even the awards they have are ones I've not even heard of and I have a web design magazine subscription, so you'd think I'd come across it in the 4 years of getting the magazine each month.

That host in all truth is a crawler, a mediocre company looking to offer all the bits just to gain members, who are going to sucked in and soon realise their nice new host inevitably can't continue to offer all those nice things.

If you are looking for a host, I will suggest one, it's one that has appeared in the adverts here on myff and it's a company I've been hosted by myself for three years without any issue or downtime(I say no downtime as I exclude my account being transfered to a new server). They've actually been helpful on the client area, I was unable to add funds so my bill each month was paid automatically they setup a workaround order at 0.00 to allow me to add funds, so my hosting was paid automatically, even then they said thanks.

:HMMMmmmmmm:
I'ma go get me a magners, as I was working today and couldn't stay up and do the new years thing last night, after realising that is probably the longest post here that isn't helping to provide a solution to a forum design/feature issue

Admin when you say

Do you mean you would consider adding them to the myff set up?

Sorry for going off topic a tad.

Yes I would strong consider adding them, of course to do them well is not trivial so it would not happen over night, but I our record on making good commitments is pretty solid.

Don't feel constrained, for some people they want the freedom of doing their own thing and that is understood and not resented. It will also be a few months+2 as we have to do this right and we have two or three months ahead where getting all our server moves done is the absolute overriding priority.

www.scottishbikers.myfreeforum.org

Well we are still here, had some trouble with the chatroom we use as anyone can get in,have told the members that the myff team have said they will start work on an integrated chatroom and that has been met with great enthusiasm.

I have no plans to move the forum now, really all we needed was the features mentioned and it`ll be great, was good to be able to point the doubters to this forum when the issue of pm`s came up during the week.

Would have had no one to fall back on if we were on our own hosting.

Long live myff....we have just passed 700 members on our board,i look forward to still being here for another 700

I'm glad to hear you are still here.

Chat room plans are still a while off as whilst some time is being found for some little extra features at the moment, a chat room is a big deal and cannot be done until server moves are fully complete.

However it may be an idea to start a thread dedicated to an integrated chat room where features can be discussed and options explored.

That will speed up the process,  it needs someone driving the push for the feature!

Makes me wonder if we should offer a fixed price deal on doing this sort of thing, we could set it to correspond to say 3 hours work on the assumption that it would typically take about 1.5 hours, but we would give the commitment to get the job done if at all possible or your money back.

Great idea.

What would that cost though?
