Any idea on how to handle the Avatar dump file?

I know where the Avatars are usually kept on the forum software, but how do I get this dump file into this directory in a way that the software understands what it is and displays the avatars correctly?

Ok, I've managed to find something that will extract the tar.z file but all it contains is the templates folders (I have these twice now from the same dump email. Please could you recheck and send me the correct avatar dump file.

Thanks

Avatar images are not stored in a forums database, any table info inside the database file will be for all the members preferences with regards to whether they link to an offsite pic (if so what address) or have one upload and where it's located, you will have to wait for admin to package any images that were uploaded to your forum avatar location.

This is something that isn't made clear on any guide with regards to exporting and importing database files of forums, when a change of host takes place.

Thanks for that,

I'll try to explain a little better.

The email I got containing the files had the following:

The sql dump (all fine, no problem)
Template file (fine)
Post attachments (fine)
Avatar file (this is a duplicate of the template file and does not contain any avatars- hence the problem).

I have sent an email requesting an up-to-date export as I am ready to move servers as soon as I receive it.

This post is to request the dump (including correct avatar dump file  Wink ) if requesting by email was not correct.

Thanks for everything.

Ahh, that's because there was some code left over from when we were transferring forums which basically said if we have an export, don't do it again.... email sent without that code.... sorry about that.

Are you saying only one export is good?
How do we tell which one is good.

You closed down our tractor bashing site.

There have been serveral down loads from the download site.

I would like to make a deal for you folks to install the old site on another hosting service - I'm willing to pay a fair and reasonable amount.

best,
bill koob

The export in the link will be good.

I will give the mods here a chance to respond on installation services before offering myself.

Our forum tractor bashing was kicked off myfreeforum.
We downloaded the data to a hosting site - after a week - they refused our business as they said the data would not load under phpbb3 - they were specifically told we needed to run phpbb2 - now they will not allow phpbb2.

Is it true the data we downloaded will not install on a phpbb3 site?

I'm not entirely sure.

But to make life easier. I have made your forum available as:

http://tractors98721.myfreeforum.org/

This will enable you to use the control panel to upgrade to phpbb3 here, we can then (freely) export the phpbb3 version.

I guess we have no choice - you must have run a modified version of phpbb2 as I just read that phpbb2 does not allow attachments and we had a ton on images on our site (tractor bashing). Is this correct? (we use the image feature) Also read that phpbb2 does not have many features to control users - true/false?

Thanks,
best,
bill koob

We may have added a lot of features to phpbb2, but we went to lengths to make sure the database is compatible with the standard phpbb2 database, so imports should work.

This is true, the phpbb2 database can be copied to a fresh phpbb2 forum.  The problem is that most other hosts do not run phpbb2 anymore, it is all phpbb3.  Unless you run your own hosting for it (by that I mean taking care of it yourself) you are likely to be stuck with phpbb3.

As stated above, your forum has been made available for now, which allows you to go into the MYFF control panel and upgrade to phpbb3.  This will copy across all of your posts, users, content, etc.  The main problem is that it will not copy attachments the same (to my knowledge) as phpbb2 is not standard with attachments (that is a MYFF mod here).  Although you do have a copy of your attachments that can always be attached to posts later.  Perhaps make the attachments folder available to the public and allow users to save and re-upload the attachments to their posts as they find them.
