I got the portal on the left hand side using the HowToDoIt but it still hasnt worked. I have a login portal and when the code in the guide is used my portal doesn't go where it is meant to. It is beside the ads section at the top  and underneath the logo. How do I fix this so it is to the left of the topics. I think the template is 'fisubice'.

Does not look like you have either placed the code needed in the footer, or you have misread read the guide.

Have another go at following the guide: http://howtodoit.myfreeforum.org/...component=content&topicid=590. It does work

I've gone portal mental and they all work and are placed where I wanted them to be.

I've used most of these guides: http://howtodoit.myfreeforum.org/...hp?component=forum&forumid=32.

Have look at mine if you want: CARS AND MOTORSPORT FORUM

Good Luck

I followed the directions given to the letter. I have searched these forums and the Howtodoit forums with no joy in solving my problem.

My forums are brand new. See: here

Note that the front page looks as expected. A portal on the left and only the left. Hooray!

BUT, select any item shown in the "Recent Posts" portal on the left and you then end up at a page in formatting hell. After two days of trying I have to cry "uncle!" and seek an expert's guidance here.

I have no idea why the page reverts to a dual portal view and gums up the width of the posted content at the same time. I suppose I could live with the dual portal view if the problem with the width of the middle column of actual content is corrected.

Suggestions welcome, and begged for.

You are right. What was I thinking?
What is that link for the shop where I can pay for ad free for a year? I will go do that now.

I have purchased the ad-free service for a year and see this: http://rti.myfineforum.org/sutra37.php#37

I hope amends have been made now. Are we good?

We are good, but that does not make for an instant or easy solution to a complex html problem at midnight!

My first thought though was that the Recent Posts portal might be best set as:

Link to: FORUM

rather than CONTENT

Yup, that did the trick. Whew! Thanks!

I have another issue and will start another topic for that one.

Can anyone help me aligning the top of the portal with the top of my forum?  I tried using
but this just moves both the portal and the forum down.

Many thanks,

Lee

1. You must give the (myfree/myfast/myfine)forum.org link/address of your forum. A link should be given to the problem if at all possible. Do this whether you think it is important or not. DO NO GIVE YOUR OWN DOMAIN LINK IT MUST BE THE NAME YOU CREATED HERE.
  2. Search on the forum and on howtodoit for your problem before posting. 90% of the posts we get have easily found answers if you search on a couple of key words from your post. If this is not the case report the keywords you searched on and we will make sure search works for the next person to try the same search terms. Each time someone doesn't bother to use the search, questions accumulate in the forum making it harder for people to actually find answers! as people searching will end up finding the question and not the answer.
  3. Keep it to one support question per thread, if you have another question start a new topic. This will help others using "search" to find answers.

No sense starting a new thread when this suffices, why is it that the menus force any poll in a thread over to the right? example here

http://transcendireland.myfreeforum.org/sutra1090.php#1090

Would that be related to the template I have applied? I obviously don't expect you to fix it but if you can think of what the problem might be with the template (if that's the cause) I'd appreciate some input

Ignore this question, I fixed it myself by ignoring the overall header and overall footer and just putting it in the right place in the index file

that's unfortunately one of the downsides, the adverts for the system to remain free is between the header and index body, thus the not being lined up as we'd like the fix you say isn't a fix in the normal sense as you'll only have the portals on that one page and would have to make the same edits on any other page you want the portals to appear, unless that's what your after, in which case kudos for attempting to get it looking the way you wanted

the only other way round this that I can think would sanely sort this without portals only being on one page is to have a portal_header and portal_footer tpl files with the header and footer codes and allowing for admin edits and have them inserted between the adverts and index_body and index_body and footer, but to have the files blank by default so no code gets auto inserted if people don't want it, and those that do can insert the header/footer codes into those two files to have them line up correctly without interfering with the adverts
