Mine is third on page one when you search for "Royal Marines forum".
I do have several hundred links to the forum from the main site though so that must be helping. The other thing you can do is join other forums and put your link in your signature. It does encourage people to become active in your forum as every time they post, they are creating a link. I do delete posts that are obviously link hunting... but then again, I'm nasty!

PostPosted: Thu Nov 10, 2005 3:27 pm    Post subject: I devised a google test for my message board Reply with quote

I made up a word which could not possibly exist anywhere, and then posted it at my message board, and searched for it every day. I did one post in a Subject line, and a different post with the word in the body of the post. Both showed up in google after a week or so.

The word I used was anekantavadaellada Ellada is the modern Greek word for Greece. Anekantavada is a Jain religious term which means "many-pointedness" or "no one single point of view", which means that any attempt to express the truth of reality will only be a partial expression from one particular angle.

No, I am not Greek or of Greek descent, but I studied ancient Greek and learned to speak Modern Greek. No I am not from India. I am American born of mixed Dutch, German, British ancestory, but I learned much about the religions of the world through study (including many interesting ancient religions in India).

Put them together as anekantavadaellada and it has no particular meaning. It is like the story of Rumplestiltskin (spelling). He thought no one would ever be able to guess his name.

So, make up your own test word (not too obscene please), like wiggywanklerunker (i just made that up). Then, post it at your forum, and google.com search for it every day. It should show up within two weeks.

Regarding message boards and content, it seems to me that a message board should be a means to an end, and not an end in itself. We should have something which we really need to say and want to say. We should not simply have a desire for a message board, and then try to dream up things to post there, to lure and trick people into joining.

The horse should be in front of the cart. Do not put the cart in front of the horse (or donkey) lest you be percieved as "bass-akwards" (aha, I fooled the censor software).

You should make contacts on the internet who share your interest, whether it be sports, or politics, or crafts, or literature, or whatever. If you only have 10 internet friends who post and perhaps chat in a CBOX, then the existence of your message board is justified. You do not have to have hundreds of members and thousands of posts.

Just some thoughts on the topic.

Oh, and regarding chat boxes such as CBOX in the footer html enhancement at myfreeforum.org, I had the revelation yesterday, than I can insert my CBOX code in all 450 pages of my OTHER website which is 7 years old, and all pages of http://toosmallforsupernova.org where I have started to write my first novel, and folks visiting any of those pages can all meet in the chat room. Hey, why not!?

Perhaps it is wise to define acronyms at the outset for those poor newbies who are not as omniscient as we.

You are non existant pretty much on google.

I notice you have got a "www" link here, but do you post elsewhere with a www link and a link in your "sig"?

It is the backlinks that count.

I am keen to see the co-op adnetwork integrated into the forums to really boost this process.

Well, have you tired any of the techniques discussed in this forum?

A quick overview:

  • Advertise your site in your signature(on other forums)
  • Get a good Google PR(submit to search engines, directories, etc)It is also critical that you get other anime-related sites to link to you.
  • Never give up-your forum may be slow at first, but it will eventually build up [list=]

    Hope this helps-

Though the biggest step is from none to a few. For that you will need to twist arms

So I should go to other anime forums and meet with people and encourage them to join my forum.
