Here's some tips and info on SEO for the beginner:

hUH...What's a Page Ranking(PR)???
PageRank is a score given by Google to each web page (not site) on a 0-10 logarithmic scale that is used as one (amongst many others) of the parameters for building the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). This score is calculated using an incremental mathematical agorithm

What can I do to improve my PR?

Get more links to your site! The more links you get, from pages with PR as high as possible, and with as less on-page links as possible, the higher your PR will get You can get links to your site by submitting it to directories , exchanging links with other webmasters, or by having a quality site and promoting it a little bit so that people naturally link to you

Where can I find people to exchange links with?

To be able to exchange links, you'll need a links section Go to sites prefarably related to your topic, and introduce your site, why it is relevant to their own topic, then suggest a link exchange. You may be much more successful if you visit sites that don't have themselves a forum for their visitors to discuss. You may even offer them a dedicated area in your forum if they seem to get high traffic.

What should I not do for SEO?

Do not go to link farms,(places with PR O or 1, do not use blind link exchange services, do not use spam techniques (hidden text, cloaking pages etc.etc.).

Quality content counts as well. Written with an eye to the keywords involved in the subject.

If you are a forum that specialises in green widgets, then writing a sticky post at the top a forum that talks about green widgets, using the words green widgets and other keyword associated with green widgets, and the lock the post so no one can dilute the green widget content, then someone looking for green widgets with a search engine is more likely to find their green widget information on your green widget forum....

Ok you can get penalised for over egging it But I really would recommend a few high quality sticky posts.

My hugely popular forum:

http://forum.downsizer.net/

actually has 7000 topics and almost 4000 pages stashed in google! which is one hell of a proportion of the perhaps 12000+ pages of the forum. When starting out you have it tougher. A fanstatic bit on info on page 3 of a thread posted 2 months ago, probably is not going to be googled! You need to look to concentrating good content on prime pages.

Not really, if you want SEO in a nut shell it's:

"links, good content, keyword optimisation"

Quantity helps, but Quality is better.

I've used all of my techniques, but my PR is still very low. It does take time.

Are you sure that the number of members doesn't have an effect on it's PR?

Not directly. If of course your members are posting links it will help.

Time is also a big big factor. You can be talking the better part of a year!

No. It is incoming links not outgoing ones you need.

Ok you can get penalised for over egging it But I really would recommend a few high quality sticky posts.

My hugely popular forum:

A fanstatic bit on info on page 3 of a thread posted 2 months ago, probably is not going to be googled! You need to look to concentrating good content on prime pages.

Prettu impressive forum for a year old. Can I stick a popular topic that talks about my forum's main subject? Woulkd that help? Or should I just make my own and lock it?

Sticking is good, construction and locking is better.

So like make a category dedicated to links, and then post links to other forums?
