I think if you dropped the ad free price a little more people would do it. I would for sure.  or give the options of 3 months as well as 6 months. then people might try it and I imagine when the adverts came back they would notice how much better it looked without and would continue paying. I just think its a little steep the price off adfree.

Pricing advert free is a tricky one, and we have had the occasional offer price on it.

I honestly can't believe people are saying forums won't donate £10 - this is an excellent forum provision and I am sure people will pay to continue this service which is pretty much free other than this donation request.

I have only just seen the link on my own forum and have put a sticky up to my members asking them to donate.  £2 each is not going to break anyone.

How many forums do you have admin? just out of interest

Technically there are 29,236 forums currently on the system. But as a rough guide only 10% are active. So perhaps 3000 active forums.

You would hope it would be easy 600 forums raising £10 each and the funds are sorted. But people don't seem to see it that way, hence the feeble amount raised.

It is a shame, as I would estimate that 90% of the sites that have to earn a living are showing more advertising than we do. As you point out the level of donation needed to avoid the risk of us going the same way is pretty small.

It's not just that, it's also that not everybody has the money to.

I've paid for the ad-free, and will be renewing, and have also paid for the dns account, rather than a free one.  But I don't have the money spare to donate right now.  When I get more money, it's a different story.

And also that a small amount of people visit this forum for more than a quick answer.

No one is getting at you, or others that don't donate personally.

But the sums raised are nevertheless quite indicative of peoples desire for a free lunch.

well, I have had a good response from the members on my forum, so in the next week or so I will set up a paypal system - they can pay me and I will do the donation on behalf of the whole forum.  It needs to be in a week or so as I am currently doing another donation from them for another forum member who has had a bereavement, but it will come.

Even if people donated a £1 it would help.  I think sometimes people feel mean doing that but they shouldn't as it all adds up when a lot of people do it.  I do understand that some people are finding things hard though.

I hate to say it, but I'd rather people put £1 in a (good) charity collection box or spent it on beer. With very low amounts paypal fees eat up the money and I don't like to see people finding that their good intentions are diced up like that.

Thanks though.

Many thanks, as I said to Nick though I am not after the money from people who are here and actively helping others, the plan always was to work that the other way when resource allowed. But as I say thanks all the same

Lest we not forget, the service I came from and to, the position I'm in now is due to myff, the service I was on was ismply poor, very rigid and even when coming here with no knowledge, the flexability allowed me to learn, with almost all of it being self taught with the support of myff and a few of symon's solid guides to boot, so I have no qualms supporting the system that supported me, becuase no system would've meant me still struggling on some mediocre host still with very little knowledge resulting on me doing nothing but sitting on facebook, blogger, twitter, myspace, bebo, vampire freaks pretty much all day long doing well nothing.

I gotta agree there.  This is hands down the best support forum I've seen, I absolutely love it.  It's great because I had no real experience with phpbb3 before, but I feel I've got a decent hold on it, although I did start with a little coding experience.
