7.2 drives are not enough. You can't economize there.
memory is a trickier issue.
Also I'm anticipating $10,000 as we are not buying now, or even in a few months and so I figure solid state drive options may up the price.
Though we can beat most Dell web site prices.
It is a very complex area. _________________

I just scoped the Dell site for what we would currently buy and it is $7,000, you also missed the hardware support options that are expensive. Remember we are mission critical for a lot of people!
But as I say, we are aiming at going upmarket compared to the current type of server, so I am anticipating the $10,000 level. _________________

I think showing more ads to guests would help.
Whatever you decide, i'll try and get some donations to you asap. _________________

Torture guests more with more and more adverts, and perhaps have an option for 5 years advert free for £100, to get cash in the bank?

As stated before, selling ad space for donations is very appealing to forum owners. They scratch your back, you stratch their's. Maybe even selling text/banner ad space on the main websites (myfreeforum.org, myfastforum.org, etc.) to forum owners in the MYFF network. I'd certainly pay for that, if I had the money.
Also, how about the guest ads thing. You know how if a forum is not advert free there is a google ad the bottom of each topic page? Why not put those ads below each post in a topic on non-advert free forums that only appear to guests. Very non-intrusive, and could increase ad clicks by 10x or so.

You can only have three ad blocks a page with google, but I suppose we could put them on the top and bottom posts. I'm still reluctant to up advertising though. _________________

Those guests would never come back.
Ads under every post is not a good idea!

Indeed, though I like the idea of a bigger guest ad block at the top that explicitly says the ad will go away if you register. It keeps it a little below the very annoying threshold, and may help both the forum and us. _________________

and also encourages signups, to further extend the life of a forum, with the possibility of the adverts actually being useful, I know this myself as since having a forum with myff, I signed up to my own hosting package with Evohosting which was and still is featured in the ads and in my two years with evo, I've not had any issues at all with them, so I've benefited from the ads.

Sorry if I'm bumping an old topic, but how much memory do you exactly suspect this server to have? Are you getting a blade server or a tower server? Rackmount?
All these go into account because I still sell computers that I hand craft out of he best parts possible at the best price that will knock over 15% of the price of some computers that other companies sell. (They are normally overpriced) I can work around a few configurations and see what I come up with as I have only sold 15 servers out of who knows how many other computers. None of the customers have returned a phone call or email saying they have had a problem. If you want SSDs how many and how large do you find best? How about the maximum and installed (as mentioned) memory? Processor speed? Expansion?
If I am slightly confusing anyone in any way feel free to say :P Am only expanding ideas to more out of the box suggestions...
