|
|
http://dns.myff.org/
Nameservers effect people who run their own forum domains, or indeed any other domain where they need to get beyond the default offering of their registrars. The service is frequently subject to charges (which is fair enough) and is also frequently an area where people who buy cheap domains from dodgy registrars run into problems either because the service is not properly available or is buggy
In the past we have gone through two stages, firstly we recommended the free dns service everydns.net, which has not been totally problem free, but has done a sterling job for us over the last few years, another such service is afraid.org which seems somewhat better but as a free service is perhaps a bit less free
Lately we cut out some of the work for own forum domain users, by placing them automatically on our own nameservers, and making it so that if you buy the domain from us it is even easier as the nameservers are already set for you at the registrar.
We are now taking the next logical step and offering our own free user accessible service at:
http://dns.myff.org/
You can set up any domain there, though notably not your own forums domain, as this is there correctly automatically. If you really have reason to set up specialized records on a forum domain it makes a lot more sense to stick with a service independent of the forum.
Apart from DNS management, there is also what I consider to be the best domain nameserver testing service on the net. A test that will diagnose the nameservers of any domain giving a wealth of information. These tests will be expanded further in the future.
Please feel free to play and report issues.
Note though that until Saturday only one actual nameserver ns1.myff.org is alive. You need a minimum two nameservers working if you are to make the nameservers the ones you want to use for a domain for real.

Do you have to pay for a domain, or can you get one free?

You have to pay for a good domain service, there are free ones out there, which have hidden ads and pop ups etc, and are unreliable. _________________

Yay a guide. Wish we'd seen that before we went to do our domain, but it works now.
It's really nice having your own domain and nothing is like paying for something, well, for most things.
