Was wondering why I could not get through to the "utility" server, which we are also running as a games server. Unlike our forums servers, this server was cheap as the strictest standards of uptime are not as important.

But a routing issue at an ISP. For that matter we are still fighting with a nameserver issue here, which is a bit different to routing, but it does throw a spotlight on how things can go wrong that are very much outside of any one organisations, even a big hosting company to deal with quickly.

The register also reports that the UK fasthosts have been hacked (they are no relation to the similarly named company we use to colocate the forums servers).

It all puts the couple of hours or so downtime on one of the forums servers Sunday in perspective.
