windows or linux that is the question?I have just got a new Dell Inspiron 6400 notebook, this one is being configured as the 100% dedicated myfreeforum road warrior. A machine with a 3g usb modem able to deal with the forums anywhere anytime
Previous machines for this purpose have ended up purloined for other purposes
Anyhow as part of the attempt to make the machine as versatile as possible I have installed cygwin.
http://cygwin.com/cygwin-ug-net/cygwin-ug-net.html
This is doing a pretty convincing job of running a Linux like shell under windows xp.
In day to day use I use Linux as I can configure a somewhat better desktop than under windows XP, and Linux leaves windows miles behind when it comes to command line productivity. There are things you can casually do at the Linux command line that are far harder under windows.
Yet Linux is undeniably more clunky with printing and keeping things like firefox up to date, and whilst I'm waiting to see if 2.02 firefox fixes the issue browsing in Linux under firefox has proved unstable in the new office machines.
So maybe after a year plus of being mainly Linux in the office we may be making the change back, albeit to a clever hybrid environment.

Vista doesn't even have drivers for the 3g device! Otherwise I would have played.
It is one of the things that appeals about the hybrid approach, on a lot of things windows is better and drivers is one of them.
On the other hand, as a general rule Linux is a far more stable environment, just a shame my Dell C521 is trying to prove itself an exception.

Of course on one level it matters not a lot, in the office we have windows and Linux and everything is working at a very workable level.
The road warrior should perhaps not be configured to do the lot anyway, if I'm taking a rare break, then does it matter that much if some set of rank images has to wait a few days?
