What "hack"/portal component to add next?

I'm looking to add a few more components now we have the system established. points/shop hacks will be done in future when I'm happy with them being properly described.

We can however now quickly and safely implement other similar hacks to the karma and comment components. A "buddy list" comes to mind as something easy to do, though even there I'd want to know what people want out of such a component.

Any other suggestions? We are looking for relatively simple ideas for now!

To recap a little our portal/xprofile system has gone through a few phases.

1) What you might call the readonly portal that could just display a different view of the forum.
2) Adding the xprofile system.
3) More complex portal components like the gallery
4) The new interactive components like ADDRATING that utilise a new portal database system in conjunction with the xprofile system.

It has taken close to a year to get to this point, as all the while the most important priority has been to keep the core forums system stable and to find ways of making the portal system work in a way that does not mean constant disruption to the core forums code or excessive load on the servers.
In theory we are now pretty much at the point where the portal should have a change to come into its own making myff forums take another leap ahead over other forums.
I think we could put forward a good argument that a myff portal enabled forum is a more advanced and much more usable forums system than phpbb3 is liable to be!

There's one thing I want phpBB to have that invisionfree had. And that's the subtitle for threads, is it possible to add that hack to phpBB? And make it only accessible for administrators?
admin (no pm's please)

What do you mean "subtitle"? never heard of that one.
The Alchemist

That's what I'm talking about.

Also I had this idea on forums having they would have a statistics beneath it, where you can click it and see what is the Posts per Day of that forum.

two points.

1) That is not a portal component type hack.
2) It would need a database addition for something I doubt would be very much used.
The Alchemist

Too bad..

Anyway, new idea, how about adding a friends/buddy list? Like what the phpBB 3 demo forum has. It looks good and is easy to go along with your contacts, than looking for their posts just to PM them or something like that..
admin (no pm's please)

Buddy list is in my first post, but I asked for people to tell me what they wanted from it.
The Alchemist

I, for one, would like it to be displayed in your profile page under a table named "Buddy List" then their names listed and their names are links to their profiles, beside them are PM links for easy access for PMing and beside that again is a online/offline indicator, and last beside that, a check box whether you want to remove a member from your list. And below all the names is a blank box where you could type a name of a member and beside that a clickable named "Add friend".

Is that detailed enough?

is the pm portal in progress?
if not could that one be looked at?
sorry if ive got the wrong end of the stick
admin (no pm's please)

The PM portal is a user addable portal that needs a work over by me which I should get round to, but this thread is about new portal components all together.
BookwormUK

oh ok, sorry

Maybe a calendar similar to this: http://portalogy.myfastforum.org/index.php , with an admin only ability to add notes to dates.

yeah thats good, only i'd like to let members post dates on it even if it meant admin had to approve it first?

Events/calander is definitely on the agenda, and I know I have said that for rather a long time. But the idea is still to build slowly in levels of complexity. The calender mod would likely be the most complex portal component I ever do! Even a port of the arcade hack to the portal system might be less complex.

Just to make sure Admin had read it.

Sounds about enough.

Calendar Hack
admin (no pm's please)

Calendar hack has already been discussed as one for later.

The buddy hack has such a lot in common with the comment hack that it will only take a few hours, but that may as well be done next week when the comment code has matured.

I may see what can be done with Nicks private message portal today.
BookwormUK

yeay!!!!

If you fiddle and it works out fine, remeber about adding a bit for removing the java popup, as the component wont need it, lets people take it out or leave it in.

Is it possible in phpBB to have a hack that when you promote a user to moderator status it shows beneath the moderator title a link to what forum they moderate?
admin (no pm's please)

Unless you are using a global mod group each forum shows its mods, so why duplicate it in a messy fashion?
The Alchemist

This is what I mean:

admin (no pm's please)

I can't see the point of adding server load for that.
The Alchemist

It was just a decoration idea..
