Things will end up a tad faster as a result though.

No downtime as such, a window though of maybe 4-5 minutes on the Saturday morning things get installed where some files may be out of step with others and hence a small risk of funnies happening with profile fields.
Major annoyance is that this level of change puts a freeze on other bits of code development until it can be deployed and deemed problem free.
