| McAfee wrote: | | On September 18, malware was found that exploits an unknown vulnerability in the processing of Vector Markup Language (VML) in Internet Explorer and Outlook. Several malicious websites that exploit the VML vulnerability have been found. Microsoft has addressed this issue in a patch released September 26. Additionally, the 0-Day vulnerability in Microsoft Word initially discovered and exploited in the wild on September 1 remains unpatched. Malware exploiting the Server Service vulnerability (patched in MS06-040) is actively being developed and released. This malware can be deployed without user interaction. |

An unpatched or recently patched vulnerability can be exploited by a worm, and systems worldwide are at risk to be targeted by a particular worm. No worm activity has been identified.
A high incidence of new malware that potentially can cause damage has been reported. |

| McAfee wrote: | | Microsoft has released 10 Security Bulletins covering 26 issues on October 10. Several of these issues address previously disclosed vulnerabilities. These include the WebViewFolderIcon setSlice vulnerability originally reported as a denial of service on July 18th, a Microsoft Word 0-Day from September 2 and a Microsoft PowerPoint 0-Day from September 26. Of particular concern is the WebViewFolderIcon setSlice vulnerability that McAfee Avert Labs began detecting in-the-wild exploitation of on September 30. In addition, the previously patched Vector Markup Language vulnerability (MS06-055) and the Server Service vulnerability (MS06-040) continue to be exploited. |
