The post a firefox extension threadPost whatever Firefox extension is rocking your surfing world at the moment
I'll kick of with "Quick Proxy" an icon that sits in the status bar and allows you to toggle your proxy server on and off. Surfing with a proxy is faster, but with my ISP certain sites just don't work. I can't even see www.phpbbhacks.com But now with a single click I can get places and switch back to faster surfing with another click.

ive got foxy tunes, footiefox (which gives live football scores), forecastfox (local weather forecast) and a great extension called 'stumble!'.

id recommend the stumble extension for all you FF users. you pick an area of interest (such as games etc), click the stumble button and it randomly takes you to the best sites on the net (as rated by other stumble users).
also if you come across a cool site, give it a stumble thumbs up and then other stumble users can try it out.

We get lots of visitors via stumbleapon on downsizer. I have used it myself, but will not install it as it is not exactly an aid to getting work done

We can offer the service we do, as the home is the office. With the servers in a secure data center, there is absolutely no point in paying office rents.
A whole list would take too long, but I guess some main faves of mine is session saver and the web developer toolbar.
Though maybe the all time killer feature is chipmarks. Given the need to provide 24/7 support what ever is happening, we use an SMS alert system and have access to the internet all the time via vodafone mobile connect. Chipmarks means that whether I am on the office PC, working on one of our Linux servers, or on the road with a notebook PC, I have the same bookmarks on each and every one

Surprised at that, as I find it faster than IE. But then the net does have its ups and downs in speed!

Maybe its because im using tabs have 4 tabs up but when i click in a thread say on here the sigs and banners are taken much much longer to load than I.E
Then again i am running 3 comps at the same time but the others are on I.E so i didnt think it would matter.

Well you do have to consider the time it takes for caching to build up.

I am not certain what "bookmarks" are. So I shall google for it now.
I went to chipmark.com and registered. I guess bookmarks are simply favorite sites, saved links. I had been wishing for a way to access favorite links (ok bookmarks) from any computer, and to be able to export them and import them.
So, one more good reason to use firefox. Though, I see that chipmarks work with IE also.

Obviously we cannot control what browsers and extensions people use. But remember the adverts pay for the forums to run. If most people start using that sort of thing, then we cannot exist!

3 cheers for myfreeforum.org Long Live AdminI agree with Admin. If we use the wonderful free services of myfreeforum.org then we must act in such a way as to allow advertising and revenues which support myfreeforum.org
I volunteered my site to move to the new server. I elected to pay for my site, which means advertising free. As an oversite, during the move, ads are back, but I am quite pleased to allow them to remain, since it will mean possibly extra revenue for myfreeforum.org and also gives my site noticably more attention from google spider bots, which I am begining to see as an advangate to me, in the search engines. I mention this fact, not to complain, but to emphasize how we should really feel about advertising and support for such a site as this. I am quite happy to pay AND permit advertising, if it will help the growth and stability of myfreeforums.org.
The only thing which really irritated me were those ugly smiley face avatar ads, but they are gone now. And as Nietzsche said, "If this does not kill me, it can only make me stronger."
Plus, I benefit enormously from what I learn here, learning about firefox, and chipmarks for example. I installed firefox last week, and chipmarks today. And I have learned other useful software things which I document at my message board under SOFTWARE something something... you would see the forum for it at my board. And that reminds me, I must post there to document firefox and chipmarks.

sorry about, we are still dicovering little bits of "custom" configuration that go awry if things are moved, domains repointed etc.
I have said it before though, I actually like the adverts so long as we are able to keep them in proportion. The google adverts do contextualise after a while and you see things you may well want to see.
|
Sitaram
|
I knew right away that it was that "repointing" issue, and that you had moved my site... but as I say... leave it be for now.... I am less lonely with all those little spiderbots crawling around.... sort of like that one sci fi movie i saw, cant remember the name.... and the little spiders crawl throught he ghetto tenament, scaning everyones retina, while they all go about their business, fighting, loving, sleeping, getting drunk...
I will look at my dvds tonight and post the name here.

I hope in another few months all the wrinkles will be out of the system.
When we started we did not write an all singing all dancing system, why spend months of coding on an idea that might not work!
Even now there are still significant chunks missing, some people have paid for advert free forums, initially there was no where to even record the payment expiry date on the system These are now recorded, but there is no actual expiry or reminder mechanism in place!
We are now on MKIII of the management system.
MKI got us launched.
MKII corrected all the major flaws that become apparent as 1000's signed on, and was the biggest upgrade we have made. It was also mult server aware, and has proved so far at least to have things right enough for future upgrades without downtime.
MKIII Came on line as we started moving forums to multiple servers.
Actually to be more accurate once MKI was scrapped the changes have been a lot more gradual than there really being different versions.

I've just downloaded Firefox, and it is pretty fast.
My favorite extensions are:
Foxy Tunes(this essential for any muscian like me)
Faster Fox
Grease Monkey
Edit CSS
HTML Tidy
abcTajbu
BB Code Xtra
and my favorite would most definately be DownThemAll. Files download so much quicker using DTA. It is nearly instantaneous!

I know some firefox things like the extensions need a restart. But don't know the answer on this. Post a link to the site in question and I could try for myself.

I just tried a restart and nothing! I know this works because it was fine at the office. Its an embedded file here

I definetly have QT on my system because I can play QT files through firefox with other sites such as here

Not a major problem just an annoyance because I cant work it out.

It is indeed a wonderful world!
This is a nice one for use with the quick reply box on forums BBCodeXtra it adds a right click context menu allowing you to BBcode your post in the quick reply box without having to type the bbcode itself.
Nice little one especially as I can never remember all the codes, now I don't need too!!
PS this was all done in the quick reply box using this extension.

Another quirky little one I have been using, working in Financial Services I often need to use a calculator this extension adds a toobar icon for a calculator. You can set it to open as a sidebar, so when I have to add for example commission items together from a web page I can do it without leaving the webpage.

One last one for now I tend to have to view a lot of PDF files this extension
PDF Download
Makes that so much easier, you can customise it to open PDF's in a new tab, new window or even the PDF viewer you use. e.g. I have acrobat 7 pdf viewer, but prefer using my full version of adobe pdf writer 4. Normally PDF's open in the system default viewer, with this I can force them to open in pdfwriter 4, therefore making my life a whole lot easier!

Just a quick flying visit, work has gone mental recently hence my abscence. Just though I would bump this thread and mention this extension IE Tab It embeds IE into FF and allows you to set sites that will automatically open as an IE embedded tab in FF.
I work in Financial Services and a lot of companies extranet sites can only be accessed via IE. I use this extension to make sure any bookmark for one of these companies opens as an IE embedded tab in FF.
Been using it a couple of weeks now and its great, saves so much hassle when I come across a site that only works on IE. Well worth a look.

This is one I have wanted since day 1 of Firefox:
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1122/
Not only will it spread tabs over multiple lines, but also it adds features from other extensions. I have removed about 4 extensions since installing this!

Missed this one completely, love it though a big extension but as you say with the features it has from other extensions I have got rid of 5 extensions that this duplicates.
Another one I like is this, https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2110/ which minimizes your browser windows to the system tray. Something I use with Outlook 2003 and was glad when I found it for FF.

With tab widths set to as small as I can whilst giving a decently readable title which works out at 7 tabs across, I seem to work at a 3 rows of tabs level. Did I mention I really needed this extension from the start!
|
MarkD
|
Well I haven't yet got down to more than 2 rows I have mine set to tab width fits tab title, ideal when you have to have several tabs open from one site. At least you can see which tab is which, saves having to to go through all tabs with the same icon looking for the one you want.
Love the ability to have the writing in the tab a different colour if you haven't visited that tab yet. You would be amazed at the amount of tabs I open and then forget about
I really can't believe that less than a year ago I was still using IE.

This is nifty, it is googles version of chipmarks, but with mnay more features.

Given the iffy nature of the chipmarks server, I have made the switch.

To be honest I hadn't even thought of that, will have a look into it, but it certainly doesn't seem to be slowing my system at all, although firefox is using 81,300 k of memory, nearly as much as the rest of the programs I have open in total!!

Sitting on 327mb in Linux at the moment, it could be the memory allocation mechanisms are very flawed.
I have never written a large system before that has not needed a lot of tuning in this area.
