and whats the difference between a tomato and a tom-ay-to

you say po-tay-to I say po-tah-toLOL the main difference between a tomato and a to-may-to is where you come from. The UK has a wide diversity of accents in an area roughly the size of Texas. The U.S. has an even broader spectrum of accents. It's really fascinating to listen to the way people speak and then find out where they are from.
For example, here in South Carolina, there is a large population that descends from settlers originally from England. Hence there are a lot of tones and accents used which are similar to those one might hear in London. While up in Miniappolis, MN a HUGE percentage of people descend from Norwegians and you can still hear it in the way they speak.
Language is a wild thing in that even though we all speak "English" there are words that mean totally different things in different locals...
for example the word Napkin in the US it's a cloth or paper used to wipe the face, mouth etc... in England, as I understand it it.s what we call a diaper at least that's one possible meaning.
what other words are likely to cause misunderstandings in conversation across the big lake?

You are thinking Nappy/Diaper. As far as I know Napkin has the same meaning.
But regional dialects to vary. I and no end of other kids when we moved to my neck of the woods got told to put our "Daps" on at school physical education and had no idea what to do
Do you understand the term "take the piss" I have yet to know a yank who knows that common UK expression.

take the pissWell, it's very similar to take a piss... but I have a feeling it doesn't mean the same thing.

Same as "taking the mickey" but with harsher overtones. But then the last yank I asked didn't know that one either.

I was being generous as England proper is about the size of Indiana, I just wasn't sure how far the UK extends so I didn't want to insult anyone!

doh!ewww that's a low blow! but probably, unfortunately, a deserved one.
Once time I was touring in Israel, and had teh priviledge of being mistaken for a European as opposed to an American, because I wasn't "Loud and obnoxious"
It's very sad that Americans are perceived that way, as a majority of us aren't. It's just the loud obnoxious minority that makes the rest of us look bad.
Ah well.

The stereotypical American Tourist is a poor advert for the USA.
Any one else love the US tourist scene in "Train spotting"
