If you go to Styles add in the admin panel, you can now select from different style categories.
core - the main styles
user - these are styles created for users before we allowed used editing. As such pretty much based on core styles but with users own logos.
portal - multiple column portal styles.
the classification is work in progress.

I have actually removed the "user" category. No one should really be using them as they add no value to the system.
