reliability of electrical power

OK, I'm on day 6 of being without electrical power at my home. I know a large percentage of the folks here are located in the United Kingdom. Do you have power issues there?

How about the rest of you? How reliable is your power?

I will say that I'm so thankful that we didn't have floods and power outages.. I can't imagine how the folks who survived teh hurricanes this year deal with it.

But I'm still not happy!

Symon

Wedo have trouble sometimes but as im from the south and near london its never a major problem, maybe a few hours at the most.

However if you live in the country then sometimes it can be off for days i,m lead to believe

The UK grid is pretty variable. I run a home office and have UPS systems on all the gear to protect against minor outages and spikes. Touch wood they have not been needed for quite awhile, but we did have a pretty bad patch when gear was being put at serious risk

No problems where I live. It's very reliable here. We only ever have a power outage like once every 4 months which only lasts for 2 minutes (the alarms that are triggered are soo noisey, everyone down my street has an alarm!)

I wish I had an UPS because my mom turns the power off when i don't go to school and if she keeps doing that my hard drive is gonna break, it's already making bad noises when booting up.. UPS would be good for me

No UPS system is going to power you all day, but they do activate an automatic shutdown if the OS supports it.

Powering off PCs at the mains is a really really bad thing to do

If she turned it off i'd wait for a while and turn it back on after... and hopefuly the UPS would recharge?

and how long do you think my comp would last if the poweroff keeps continueing?

I see it more as Russian Routette as opposed a continual degradation. I think each time the power goes off you stand something like a 2-3% chance of coming to grief. But i am no expert on this, that is simply a reflection of my experience.

why don't you...

Out of curiosity... why don't you just explain to her that by turning off the power she is going to cause a major expense, much more than any energy that the computer will use?

It's just a thought.

Tried it.... My sister thinks (THINKS) she knows it all and has told my mom to just turn the power off if i don't do as i'm told... She's told my mom that it won't do any damage, so she now believes that she can turn it off... I know alot more about computers than what my sister does but my mom wont believe me because i'm younger.. my sister is like 25.... But i've shown my mom Martin's post and I don't know if she's taken it in... If not then i'm going on ebay and buying an UPS now.. i know her password (i'm trusted!)

I'm going to find out just how much damage it causes to the hard drive and i'm going to show her....

The thing is.. if the hard drive does break then i'll lose all 1GB of songs that i've been collecting for 1 year and everything else that i've had for ages... i do have a backup drive (80GB) and might start doing backups now... but if the hard drive breaks i can't go on ebay and buy another.. the backup drive is an EXternal usb so that can't be used as bootup...

I may buy a harddrive now

I am pretty dubious about such tools.

not just your hard drive

It's not just your hard drive that will fail as a result of the power being cut inappropriately.
The system board can take irreperable damage, usually to the capacitors that regulate voltage to various portions of the motherboard. The powersupply is also often blown by this type of behavior.

I do a lot of hardware repair, and it's usually because of power failure in the building, not someone switching the system off. (i.e. there can be brown-out effects etc.) but powersupplys are very susceptible to power failures/surges, as well as system boards, then the hard drive falls third.. in general.

You can't forget the fact that your processor and memory are all attached to the system board as well.

Good luck!

Too true, I had forgot to mention those points A power supply has blown on me following an outage But everything else on a system is a lot less valuable and more replaceable than the hard drive.

xanthakita

hmmm it seems she must care more about you than money...

Wow, you've got it rough if your Mom cares more about you than money!

Go to school, do what you are supposed to and you won't regret it!
BenMcDermott

She does it when i'm really ill and have to stay off. I can't win
xanthakita

damn right
BenMcDermott

you should come play on an et server someone with me when you have time m8. it's a big laugh and it's just addictive..

i own a teamspeak server which is a voice comms where you can speak with a microphone whilst playing a game... you set a push to talk button so that your mic isn't always on...

Teamspeak download: (i presume you are on windows) ftp://ftp.freenet.de/pub/4players.../releases/ts2_client_rc2_2032.exe

Xfire (kinda like msn where you can see your friends playing online and can click a button to follow in what game they play.. good for finding out where i play on et) http://media.xfire.com/xfire/client/xfsite/xfire_installer.exe

Wolfet.exe (i presume you already have this so..... no link)
xanthakita

is it a sniper server?

is it a sniper server? I stink at the hand to hand combat servers lol but give me a sniper rifle and a decent perch! hehe

Bink
BenMcDermott

Hmmm... well out of the 3 servers i own none of them are sniper servers

but my friend has made a sniper map

i'm sure i can find a sniper server for us though in the play online list
