Just so you know, jpg does not support transparent backgrounds.
gif does support transparent backgrounds, but does not support semi-transparent (hence 'blockiness' on some images') png supports transparent (and semi transparent) backgrounds but does not support animation. |

hopefully with higher net speeds mozilla make their push on ani png support, as I'm sure they found it possible, but pointless at the time due to lower speeds and the lack of compression in pngs, so here's to hope that mozilla get back on this as it would be another thing they'd have over IE. samples:

as bravo said there are benefits of png, but they can't be animated as yet, so it depends will the ranks be animated, if no, then use png, if there will be some animated then use gif. |

If your artwork uses semi transparencies, use png, if not, use gif
examples: A circle in .png format: 
Same circle saved as gif: 
See the slight blockiness of the gif version on the outer ring? Though the inner ring remains fine |

Well I made some new ones which are .png as they are not animated
