If you are experiencing slower posting than you would like, then consider switching the search settings to use mysql fulltext searching.

The mysql system will make posting on your forum a whole lot faster, as most the posting time is phpbb3 thrashing about updating its own search indexing system.

The price for this is that you lose a little control over how search operates as you then rely on mysql which is the underlying database system to make the decisions on how search works. In practice this is a price well worth paying on forums with 100,000s of posts.

We are currently forcing all phpbb2 forums with more than 45,000 posts over to using this system. phpbb2 gives no options on how search is handled and so it is just switching one set of arbitrary search indexing rules for another, and hence the benefits clearly outweigh any drawbacks.

With phpbb3 you are given the option and hence it is up to the admins to make the choice for themselves.
