phpbb3 reviewI am starting to look at phpbb3 changes.
The list so far is:
1) Portals. Getting the phpbb3 portal system in line with our phpbb2 system and getting more of the portals installed on phpbb3.
2) Dealing with spam on phpbb3, even if this is just making a "mass user delete" like we have with phpbb2.
3) Smilies, allowing some kind of pack selection.
Other thoughts would be welcome. But please be prepared for a negative response. phpbb3 is still being developed by the authors and what ever we do, will avoid totally forking off from the main line code.

I would love a Quick Reply box . . .
I know, I know - it's just one more click. But I am exceedingly lazy.

If you could install any of these during your review of phpBB3, it'd be great!
Cheers.

phpbb3 already has a mass user prune option bog standard in the ACP. Depending on the criteria users can be pruned with their posts (if any) either deleted or kept.
It is under the "USERS AND GROUPS" tab from the top nav bar and then "Prune Users" from the left hand pane.
No need to custom write anything.

I've never used it or looked at it, can you customise which group of users to prune or does it prune only the inactive accounts?

When you use select users(s) in that dialog it does allow you to mark many users at once manually.
So it does the needed job.

Ok thanks Admin, thats saved you perhaps a lot of work and time.
I have another request for the near future, can we have more space for uploading images on phpbb3 because its very limited at the moment.

They are being thought about.
I think they will probably be done, one of my problems has been getting into the mindset of where phpbb3 is going as stuff is still be added by the developers. This is not an easy process as I find phpbb3 irrational in many ways. A lot of nonsense over phpbb2 has been added whilst the kind of core functionality like quick reply that people are screaming out for is not there
Common sense might dictate that we should not add it ourselves as surely the developers will! But common sense does not seem to apply.
All the same now I am looking at phpbb3 closely, I am still trying to think hard and carefully about where we and they are going.

The portals update appears to be working, and I have added fixes to the automatic display or portals, and have also added the KARMA portal to phpbb3 and it seems to work.
I think we will have an initial deployment of these change Saturday and let the dust settle before adding more.

No chance of adding a transfer cash function? My forum'd really benefit from this more than any other hack, so if you could add this i'd be really pleased.

The XACTIONS and XCASH portal are already there in phpBB3. So aside from the automatic display problem cash transfer is there already.

Sorry, but how?
There's no "action" field in the XCASH portal.
|
admin (no pm's please)

That's just one bit of the function though, however clearly it will all be a lot more fathomable after the display issues are sorted, and hence it will all get done in the next week or so.

Much more sensible to wait until Monday or so.

Some final testing has revealed some issues
So I am delaying this another week, obviously aside from fixing things, other bits may be done as well.
|

Moving on to things like transfer cash now, and it has revealed that more issue would have cropped up if I had installed Saturday.
|

I have managed to add a bit more of a compatibility layer to phpBB3, but on some levels that is a bit of a lost cause, you can only go so far.
|
abc12345
|
So transfer cash won't be operationable for another wek?
|
admin (no pm's please)
|
It is surprising just how many little tweaks have been added to phpbb2 since the portal were originally ported to phpbb3.
Essentially the work will continue this week, if we are at a stable point Saturday it will get released, if things are midway through another feature it will not be. I don't actually plan on that happening, but I'm making the point that things are now moving on phpBB3 and what matter is the overall progress and not specific release dates.
|
admin (no pm's please)
|
I have split the support question asked here to another thread. For the record though the only changes so far installed to phpbb3 are some individual portal and portal template fixes. Nothing that should have de-stabilized anything.
|
admin (no pm's please)
|
The phpbb3 actions portal has been extended to include more options, what is missing over phpbb2 still is the moderation options, but then phpbb3 has those functions anyway.
The FILTER portal is also now there.
Basic operations like sending a PM via an action are testing out okay.

Phpbb3 UpdatesCould you possibly fix the template "Preview" button? It seems to not let me see previews anymore before I install them, and I can't see what template I'm getting

I think styles have always needed installing to be previewed.

The portal changes are now in place.
This effects the general backend portal code and how portal are displayed.
Specifically it also fixes the display of portals in topics and brings the XCASH and XACTIONS portal up to speed and adds the XFILTER portal.

Cheers admin for the Transfer cash!
However, I was wonderring, how can you change the screen that comes up when you click 'transfer cash'? As at the moment, for my forum it just comes up with a black screen with a box to enter in the amount of credits to transfer.
|
admin (no pm's please)
|
There will be a cms_transfer.tpl file you can edit.
|
abc12345
|
Ah okay, I think it's in cms_xcash.tpl
And also, will the function where the receiver and the donator receives a PM after transferring cash become available on phpBB3?
|
admin (no pm's please)
|
You can select an action to perform after the transfer and that action can be a PM.
|

|
Does that mean that only some portals are changed?
I see the KARMA portal was added to phpbb3 (I don't recall seeing it before), but I am still anxiously awaiting the donation portal for phpbb3.
By the way - Can a guide be thrown up for KARMA on phpbb3? I know it's similar to bb2, but bb3 custom profile fields have different options and I'm not sure exactly what to do. I could guess and check - But I know I won't be the only one with questions. I didn't see a guide in the bb3 howtodoit.

Another round of portals and bits and bobs will be in either this week or next.
Guides do need writing for phpbb3.

Well the last week has seen the video bbcode installed on phpbb3.
But the week has been dominated by marsjupiter matters that are still ongoing, hopefully Monday or Tuesday will see those matters resolved and I can get back to more on phpBB3.
The donations portal will be a priority, not least at it should be pretty easy.
It is worth remembering that as phpBB3 CAPCHTA has been broken and the last phpbb3 release was months ago now, that we are expecting a new phpBB3 official release to be coming soon, and it is not a good idea to be knee deep in our own new mods when that occurs.
|
admin (no pm's please)
|
The Donations portal itself seems to be running okay on phpbb3, but the admin side of it is proving tougher, hopefully though it will be completed tomorrow.
|

Touch wood the admin side of the donations portal is now working as well.
There was quite a bit involved though, so may wait until Saturday morning to actually install it.

The donations portal should now be live in phpbb3.

I note that we have had something like 8 phpbb3 updates in the last month or so, can't put an accurate figure on it, as just what really qualifies as a change?
But whatever the figure, it is demonstrably showing our intent to bring phpbb3 up to speed.

Has anyone even managed to get KARMA to show as an image in phpbb3?
It may be possible, but I have not see it, phpbb3 custom profile fields are very limited at the moment

I have not gotten the Karma portal to show as an image because I have not seen a need for it as of yet. I do however have some 40 or more custom profile fields that do show up as an image. I do not seem to think Karma would be much different.

How are you doing these images, what does the user enter into the profile field?
|
admin (no pm's please)
|
Here is how you do it. It is crude of you ask me. Much easier in phpbb2 with our system.
in viewtopic_body.html
| Code: |
<!-- BEGIN custom_fields -->
<!-- IF postrow.custom_fields.PROFILE_FIELD_NAME eq "KARMA" -->
<b>{postrow.custom_fields.PROFILE_FIELD_NAME}:</b> <img src="ranks/Hearts/rankl{postrow.custom_fields.PROFILE_FIELD_VALUE}.gif" ><br />
<!-- ELSE -->
<b>{postrow.custom_fields.PROFILE_FIELD_NAME}:</b> {postrow.custom_fields.PROFILE_FIELD_VALUE}<br />
<!-- ENDIF -->
<!-- END custom_fields -->
|
e.g. you replace the existing custom_fields loop with one that spots ones you want to show differently and uses code to suit, in the KARMA example an image.

How are you doing these images, what does the user enter into the profile field? |
These are all images that can be purchased in the store with virtual cash. The user enters nothing, the store adds 1 on every purchase.
sample code for viewtopic_body in signature area:
| Code: | <!-- IF postrow.SIGNATURE --><div id="sig{postrow.POST_ID}" class="signature">{postrow.SIGNATURE}</div><!-- ENDIF -->
<!-- ENDIF -->
<!-- BEGIN custom_fields -->
<!-- IF custom_fields.PROFILE_FIELD_NAME eq "ROSIE" -->
{custom_fields.PROFILE_FIELD_VALUE} <a href="{postrow.U_PROFILE}"><img src="http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd1/pshivers_sd/AA%20store/rosie-1.jpg" border="0" alt="G. Rosea"></a><!-- ENDIF --> |
Sample code for viewtopic_body in profile area:
| Code: | <!-- IF postrow.RANK_TITLE or postrow.RANK_IMG --><dd>{postrow.RANK_TITLE}<!-- IF postrow.RANK_TITLE and postrow.RANK_IMG --><br /><!-- ENDIF -->{postrow.RANK_IMG}</dd><!-- ENDIF -->
<dd> </dd>
<!-- IF postrow.POSTER_POSTS != '' --><dd><strong>{L_POSTS}:</strong> {postrow.POSTER_POSTS}</dd><!-- ENDIF -->
<!-- IF postrow.POSTER_JOINED --><dd><strong>{L_JOINED}:</strong> {postrow.POSTER_JOINED}</dd><!-- ENDIF -->
<!-- IF postrow.POSTER_FROM --><dd><strong>{L_LOCATION}:</strong> {postrow.POSTER_FROM}</dd><!-- ENDIF -->
<tr>
<!-- IF postrow.S_PROFILE_FIELD1 -->
<!-- Use a construct like this to include admin defined profile fields. Replace FIELD1 with the name of your field. -->
<dd><strong>{postrow.PROFILE_FIELD1_NAME}:</strong> {postrow.PROFILE_FIELD1_VALUE}</dd>
<!-- ENDIF -->
<!-- BEGIN custom_fields -->
<!-- IF postrow.custom_fields.PROFILE_FIELD_NAME eq "CASH" -->
<dd><strong>{postrow.PROFILE_CASH_NAME}:</strong> {postrow.PROFILE_CASH_VALUE}</dd>
<!-- ENDIF -->
<!-- IF postrow.custom_fields.PROFILE_FIELD_NAME eq "REDFLAME1" -->
<a href="{postrow.custom_fields.PROFILE_FIELD_VALUE}"><img src="http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd1/pshivers_sd/AA%20store/Redflame1.gif" alt="{postrow.custom_fields.PROFILE_FIELD_VALUE}" title=""></a>
<!-- ENDIF --> |
Screenshot of custom profile field setup:
I would have set it up as Admin did with the
| Code: | | <img src="ranks/Hearts/rankl{postrow.custom_fields.PROFILE_FIELD_VALUE}.gif" > | Rather than having to code each image and profile field as a separate "if" statement, but I did not think of it at the time. I have been wanting to switch it over, but renaming all my pics and editing it all out at this point would take too much time. I wish I had thought of it at the time because adding new items is a pain.

But I have been wondering what to target next, and smilies would probably be a good area. So I will see what we can do this week.

I am following this through bit by bit to see where it leads.
A script will link all the old phpbb2 smiles to be available in the phpbb3 directory structure - done.
The smiley import has to see the old "paks" - done.
It has to not reject them as the phpbb3 format is different - done.
It has actually to import them - not done
Adding smilies has to see the complete range of smilies - done (by default phpbb3 seems to scan sub directories)
It has to divide the smilies by directory showing one at a time or it will be vile - not done.
The good news is that since phpbb3 seems to like sub-directories this may not involve database changes.
|
admin (no pm's please)
|
phpbb2 smilies paks are now successfully being imported to phpbb3
|
admin (no pm's please)
|
You can now also add catagorised smilies, there is a slight glitch that is harmless and looks a little like it might be a phpbb3 bug and not mine and hence it does bear a little more testing before this goes in.
|
Zudane
|
So.. sounds like we can't add them yet?
|
admin (no pm's please)
|
No this is not installed. Seems silly to jump in when there is still an anomaly worth investigating.
All the same I'd call this very good progress, there seems little reason to suppose this will not be there is a day or three, installation wise it is two files and running a script on each forums system no database changes involved.
|
Zudane
|
Curiosity, what is the problem that's coming of it?
|
admin (no pm's please)
|
When you add smileys, you get a message like:
| Code: |
The smiley has been added successfully.
The smilie “icon_confused.gif” was ignored, as there was no emotion entered.
The smilie “icon_frown.gif” was ignored, as there was no emotion entered.
The smilie “icon_sad.gif” was ignored, as there was no emotion entered.
The smilie “icon_smile.gif” was ignored, as there was no emotion entered.
The smilie “icon_surprised.gif” was ignored, as there was no emotion entered.
..
..
|
This occurs on the live version of the code as well, and since this code has not to my recollection been touched by us, it looks like a phpbb3 issue. Of course "ignored" is not a big problem, but the code should be picking up correctly on the state of the "add" checkbox, but then again that checkbox can be shoved off screen by the template so in a sense the "bug" could be considered rather useful.
|
Zudane
|
Ah, so it adds the one you want and says it ignores the rest? Sounds like it should be phpbb3.
|
Zina2008
|
I'm not a computer expert, just a pedant. But looking at that code, it occurs to me that there's a difference in the spelling:
Line 1:
| Quote: | | The smiley has been added successfully. |
Line 2 and subsequent:
| Quote: | | The smilie “icon_confused.gif” was ignored . . . |
Could the spelling be enough to throw it off the scent?
|
admin (no pm's please)
|
Since those are simply the error messages it generates, spelling is not an issue.
The issue is somewhere in the way the check box is tested, and I will suss that out in the morning.
|
admin (no pm's please)
|
Actually it seems the issue is that the code checks for the error it reports before it tests the checkbox.
If I alter than and then they do, then confusion arises. This is exactly why I don't like messing in phpbb3 core code like this.
But anyhow I have deployed the code, so smileys are there for TESTING.
One note on "paks" there may be a rogue pak or two that does not correspond to the supplied smilies. I used to upload these on trust and some people who knew that a pak file was demanded, simply supplied a duff one rather than working on it I have weeded these out when I spot them.

As kind of anticipated when checked with bbcode/smilies things were not working. But that is fixed now.
I really cannot help but wonder if the new way bbcode and smilies are handled is clever or not It is certainly faster, but at the expense of more database space and more complex message storage. I guess I will give the benefit of the doubt to the phpbb3 developers on this one, but only grudgingly.
