phpbb2: Smilies being served from seperate serverThis should be a transparent change.
But should take a little load off the main servers.
Done for phpBB2 today, if no problems phpbb3 will be done tomorrow.

phpbb3 looks rather more challenging on the smilie front
However I am impressed by how useful this idea is proving, and have created code that can make core templates of our choosing have their images served from a different server. It surprising how many people do run basic subSilver forums!
One issue raised by all this tweaking is that it is breaking one of our previous cardinal rules about server dependencies. All of a sudden a forum may be depending on three servers all being operational at once The argument to justify this is that the smilie server failing would be a relatively minor cosmetic issue, and the template image server will be on a shared hosting system that has proved very reliable on uptime. All the same we will have to see how it goes.

Searched under, smilies, smiley, smileys, smilie problem
Hi,
Thanks for this notification about the updates. Just to check, are you still updating at the moment? Since this morning, the list of smiley's showing on the admin panel, is not the same as those available on the forum - there is a greatly reduced number available on the forum.
I have tried re-installing the smiley packs and deleting the existing to see if this 'reinstalled' them.
Is there now a limit on the number of smilies available on the pop up window in forums?
Thanks for any help.

We limited the number in the popup window to 100, is there really a practical use for more

Thanks for letting me know. Well, unfortunately my members have been a bit spoilt before now! They just love em, This is what happens with a girls only forum
The problem is their favourites are from all different packs, if this is a permanent change, I'll have to add them all individually.

I'm open to argument, but I would have thought more than 100 or so open in a popup would have been painful anyway.

I know what you are saying, although they didn't seem to mind. Once it's open, it's open if you see what I mean.
Anyway, if that's the way the majority roll, that's the way we have to go I guess!

It is not set in stone. What number seems right to you?

majority of sites use well under 100. 50 would suffice for most sites, but 100 is a reasonable limit. How many of the smilies you had listed were actually often used?
You could always give a list of smilies so that people can type them in.

Hi, thanks guys. They all seem to be back again this morning?
In answer to your question, if this is going to be limited, 150 would be fab, if you don't want that many 125 or so would be great.
I understand a lot of forums use less, although this was one of the reasons the girls on the forum loved this so much when we set up here!

I simply removed the limits, the customer is always right and all that

Oh, bless your heart, that's amazing thank you! You don't understand how happy they will all be
They've been overusing them already this morning simple things and all that...!
Thanks again admin!

I'm not sure exactly what it is, but can something be done to limit the time down further before reverting to the on-server images?
Once in a while I get images showing up as the alt text, namely the ranks most often, and nearly every page has the exact same smiley show up as :woo: rather than the smiley itself, until I mouseover it.
It's rather annoying, especially since the ranks expand the profile part of the viewforum table, and without it the row is off-set.
