phpbb2: Post thanks system

This has been vaguely requested any number of times, only to fall down dead when I have tried to ask people more specifically what they want

Whatever they wanted, it has always plainly fallen outside of what is easy to do using our portal system, so again it has always been something that needed more consideration.

Because of the way such a system would have to work it would also clearly mean additional load of the servers

We have not spent all these years creating a stable forums system by going off and doing every vague add on that might be wanted by a few people, who have never seemed to clearly know what they want, and in the process wrecking the speed of the forums.

I was looking at a forum with a thanks system this evening though, and I think it could be done with one additional field to the posts table containing a count of the number of people thanking that post, plus another table relating the post, the poster, and the user being thanked. This other table would only be accessed when adding thanks.

A portal would then be used to relate post thanks to user "kudos" (e.g. how many times they have been given thanks for a post) via a custom profile field.

In terms of hurting the system this would be minimal, and I think it would be a nice feature.

I have never not wanted a thanks system, I just wanted one that I understood and which would not be a system killer.

I will however await any feedback people have before going for this.
Bravo

Thanks for that

^^^^

Not sure what's so hard about this, so I don't think it is about actually thanking the person.

Perhaps people would like to acknowledge a good post without cluttering a thread up with a quote and a "+1" which can be seen in a lot of threads.  This would make more sense to me.

"This posts has been liked by 9 users, disliked by 2 users" sort of thing, or a thumbs up, thumbs down a la youtube videos.  Makes more sense.
myff admin

That is kind of the second question which I left unasked, how many counters?

One is obviously easiest, if we have like and dislike we have two.
SRSeditor

I think it would be excellent to have a 'Like' button. Dare I say it, just like facebook

On facebook I have often wanted a 'Dis-like' one. Should there be one or should you just remain quiet?

I think both buttons would be best.

Something I was asked for some time ago was a user feedback system like ebay. Can the Karma system be used for that or is it different?

Sort of the same but not applying directly to a specific post ...
myff admin

Karma handles that reasonable well. But lets not confuse this thread with other issues.

Good thanks and agreed.

I think it would be great to have a 'Like' button on each post, even better to have an 'dis-like' as well if not too much more overhead.
Bravo

I think if it did go down this route, then a 'most popular posts' portal would probably be wanted.
I don't think it is a terrible idea, it would I think be well received across the community.
myff admin

A few portals could be done around this.

I'm kind of inclined to give people two "counts" to play with. e.g. so they could have:

likes/disliked
most useful/funniest

But they would have to make that choice.
SRSeditor

'Like' ^^^^
bazfalty

liked& disliked would be a great addition, would this be possible on php3 or just on php2

bazfalty wrote:

if done via the portal system like other mods, should be useable on both, but I wouldn't quote me, as the extra/custom profile fields maybe different, so the portal may have to look for both formats.
myff admin

as per my reply on the pphbb3 thanks thread, phpbb3 is developing and we don't want to fork.
myff admin

I'm doing the database for this now, and it seems a very small step to assign a number to the count, e.g. so you can award a post 5 stars or whatever.
I think that fits in with our general view that we should make this flexible. It has been a long time coming, so it would be a shame to mess it up. The key point is not to be cheapskate where the addition is not going to impact forum speed when viewing topics.
myff admin

This is also going to work on a numeric basis.

e.g. for now we have customcount1 countcount2 fields on the post record and customcount1 and customcount2 records.

This way we can had 3,4..N without effort.
myff admin

database done and a little bit of the code written.

This is going to be a "web2.0" affair e.g. click a button see a result, just like that

I am really looking forward to coding this one in.
myff admin

Any idea on the portal name for a portal controlling these fields?
myff admin

The basics are done. In viewtopic_body you stick something like

Code:

function customfield1(postid)
{
    url = "json_customcount.php?postid="+postid+"&counter=1&inc=1";

   $.getJSON(url+"&callback=?", function(data){
      if (data.errortext)
      {
         alert(data.errortext);
      }
      if (data.value )
      {
         $("#customfield1_"+postid).html(data.value);
      }
   });
}

and

Code:

<span class="postdetails">Thanks for this post:</span><span class="postdetails" id="customfield1_{postrow.POST_ID}">{postrow.S_CUSTOMFIELD1}</span>&nbsp;<a class="gensmall"  href="javascript:void(0)" onClick="customfield1({postrow.POST_ID})">Say Thanks</a>

and you have a very basic post thanks system.

THIS IS NOT LIVE ON FORUMS YET

I do want to polish this quite a lot before releasing.
myff admin

An example of polish would be a like/dislike system.

Like/Dislike are mutually exclusive and I was thinking up ways of doing this in the portal dialogs.
But it occurs to me that leaving this to the javascript in the template is cleaner and more understandable.
myff admin

Base laid for portal admin for this portal, so the ability will be there to reset/resync the system. Something I need already as I develop it.

I can see there will need to be two custom profile variables created for each custom field, one for what the user has done, and one for what people have done to that user.
myff admin

reset done. Though that is the very trivial part of things.

I feel the clock is ticking on this one. I really want to see in in place by our next myff anniversary in less than two weeks time.
myff admin

Need to muse a bit on custom profile fields and indeed the fields stored per post.

I have been trying to minimise resource by keeping things to a single field per post record and for each user a given/received custom profile field. But for full flexibility there is really a need to store both how much and how many. If we do that then everything simplifies and becomes more powerful.
myff admin

No progress today, too much other stuff going on and as I say the next step needs concentrated consideration.
myff admin

I think the sensible answer is that this system does not create extra complexity in the database access, the overhead of having 4 new fields in the post table is hardly going to create more than the smallest of ripples.

So if a job is going to be done lets do it properly.
myff admin

Have had to rewrite half the code to incorporate that change, but everything is so much neater as a result.

The user will have 6 new macros to play with in viewtopics as well as custom profile fields.

S_CUSTOMVALUE1
S_CUSTOMVALUE2
S_CUSTOMCOUNT1
S_CUSTOMCOUNT2
S_CUSTOMAVERAGE1
S_CUSTOMAVERAGE2
myff admin

Very good progress today.

customprofile fields such as :

THANKSGIVEN
THANKSGIVENCOUNT
THANKSRECEIVED
THANKSRECEIVEDCOUNT

can be set up and there is some decent web2.0 in the system, so for example

Code:

function customfield1(postid)
{
    url = "json_customcount.php?postid="+postid+"&counter=1&inc=1";

   $.getJSON(url+"&callback=?", function(data){
      //alert("got result");
      if (data.errortext)
      {
         alert(data.errortext);
      }
      if (data.value )
      {
         //alert("#customfield1_"+postid+ " = "+data.value);
         $("#customfield1_"+postid).html(data.value);
      }
      if (data.received)
      {
alert(data.received);
         $("#"+postid+"V1").html("new"+data.received);

      }
   });
}

manages to update how much thanks the user and the post have received, when the button is pressed without a page refresh.

at this point I think I am pretty much down to testing the admin "resync" function for this.
myff admin

Another raft of progress.

Resync seems to work.

Plus I have adding a framework for field validation that uses jquery to the admin side of profile fields and portals.
There has been a pretty inexcusable occurrence of a few fields that tell you only to enter data in uppercase and numbers, but which failed to enforce that.

That is now sorted.

I'm aiming to release this Saturday, which is an anniversary date for MYFF so a good date to add a new feature on.

I think it will need a brave admin or two to test it live, and I will add the facility for thanks to the support forum as a live test.

Nice one Admin. I can't wait to see this in action. Great work
myff admin

touch wood, this will be going in Tuesday.

This is the viewtopic_body.tpl from the support forum

It incorporates a simple thanks system.

I have only updated the database for the support forum, other forums should update tonight.
Gosu71

Does this only work for you at the moment Admin? I can't see an option anywhere to give thanks
editor

Look in portal admin for the name of the new portal
Gosu71

Oh I meant on here the help forum. I was looking to give thanks to a post but can't see an option anywhere to.

Are you sure us mortal users can see said buttons? I can't ...
Nick(NR)

your probably right, it may well be a staff only thing, for testing, thought it was for the support forum as a whole to give feedback from a larger number
myff admin

I'm sorry about that, it was totally unintentional.

But yes the code was wrappend inIF S_USERLEVEL>0
SRSeditor

Cool, I can see it now but I don't seem to be able to click it (using Google chrome) Tried to give thanks for that last post.
myff admin

try now.

Again a USER_LEVEL wrapping
SRSeditor

Works

Pop up box doesn't have the friendliest of text though.

myff admin

Looks like some error logging going on. Looking for it.
Bravo

Also if you try thanking twice it says 'you cannot retract your previous entry of one'

A 'you have already said thanks for this post' would be better I think  Wink
myff admin

Looks like I forgot to take about the debug of resyncing functions
SRSeditor

Better

myff admin

Killed that one as well.

Many many thanks for these reports.
Bravo

Now there's no pop up at all for saying thanks, and still the same you cannot retract your previous entry of 1 when you click again.
It does show an increase in the thank count though.

All working perfectly for me. Nice one Admin it's a great addition

giving thanks

I was wondering if this function was available to add to our fourm yet? If so, did you make it a portal, or is it just the code? either way where can I find it?

Has there been anymore progress on this? I just like this BETTER than KARMA as you can really see how much "HELP" a user really has been since they can gain "points" from each user for each "GOOD" post.

Was that the basic code for the mod a few post back? and it just needs to be worked into our templet? We are still phpbb2 if that matters.. I just don't want to spend time if its only for this fourm..

Thanks again..
myff admin

It is now live for all phpbb2 forums.
NeuralDream

Great addition.

Would it be possible to change the default "You cannot retract your previous entry of 1" with something friendlier, like "You have already liked this post "?

Thanks,

For that we would need to know the context of each way the system is used, it is not just for liking posts.

I see. I imagine that most admins use it as a thanks or like button and "previous entry of 1" looks very unusual for either. If there is a way to make it less awkward and still be applicable widely that would be great. If not, that's fine .

I went to portal admin but ...

I see this feature on one forum where I am "only" a member http://aaminis.myfastforum.org/index.php and really like it.

My challenge is that now I want to set it up at the forum where I got "volunteered" to be the admin, and don't see how to start. I think you said to go to "portal admin", which only shows me what portals have already been modified. If I go to "Portal Settings" I see a long list of icons, and none of them are named so that I see this one.

I admin at: http://seasablaze.myfastforum.org/index.php

Thanks for your help, thanks for creating the option!

Andrey
