Use of spam email to promote forums

Email spamming is an evil that we all hate.

It should therefore be obvious that forums should not be promoted in this fashion.

We have updated the T&C to make this clearer.

If we receive legitimate complaints about forums being promoted in this way, then we may well suspend or delete the forum concerned.

You may legitimately promote your forum via email, for example if you have members of an associated web site, you may refer to your forum in a newsletter.

However use of a mailing list of people who have not opted in to receiving emails from you is clear spam.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

What if I email users to keep them updated on promotions, and happenings on my forum?

emailing your own members when needed is not the same thing at all.

In short, how do I respectively get my forum onto my website.Realy, the only reason I came here is because I want a forum in my site. Even if I can't move the forum, can you atleast tell me how to create one of my own.
Strangest of it all,the link above doesn't link to my forum,I don't know why,but now you have the ID so you can check it out.

Mass emailing your members to let them no you have changed links is not classed as spam in my eyes.

Not if it is random and unsolicited.

Let's be sensible here, there is a degree of grey area, e.g. when I started my big forum I was actually squeaky clean, I announced I was starting it on a forum where I was well within my rights to announce it, and I let anyone interested contact me. But if I had contacted a few of the people I wanted directly I do not think that would have been spam.

It is when you contact people you have little or no relationship with via PMs/emails it starts to be blatant spam, and whether you are doing 6 a week or 100 a day it is still spam if the people getting it think it is spam.
moondood

Thanks for that :-)

Iam sure most of us do something that might be considered spam , I over the weekend have about 20 Leeds webistes to contact to ask if they would like to exchange links , all the website Iam about to contact have link pages, so i hope what iam going to do is ok? Wink

I do want to add members to my list , but I dont want to break any rules that could see my forum deleted .

because this is such a grey are , what about introducing a warnng system , three warning and you are banned kind of thing?

It is too grey an area for set rules in my view.

But in my experience:

There are those that get a bit over enthusiastic about "pimping" their forum, we have had a few downsizer members who have needed to be gently nudged to stop mentioning downsizer constantly on other forums!

Then there are those that are engaged in a systematic attempt to promote their forum without regard for any offense they may cause.

The latter group do tend to visibly stick out, and we may give NO warnings whatsoever.

But on one promote their forum within the realms of common decency is going to get into trouble.

Spamming rival forum members

Say a forum was copied and a member of the splinter forum registered with the original, did not post and then mass pmed every member promoting the benefits of the splinter site over the original?

Is that ethical? Can it be prevented in any way?
Is there a way of preventing further onslaughts to the recruitment policy?

Many thanks

If i understand you right. Someone riped off your forum and went to yours and spammed pm your members to join the ripped off one? If so that is in Violation of Terms and Conditions. You have to provide proof though..
Symon

Indeed if you can show proof then something can be done.

Is Pre-registering members considered SPAM please?
admin (no pm's please)

No of course not.

We are not out to trip people up with rules.

Spam is people doing BAD stuff, if you are doing sensible not BAD things, then you won't have a problem with us.
FriendlyGuy

Thanks for the reply there Admin, sorry to Hi Jack this thread, but it was under one of the questions I was going to ask, and hoped it was all right, placing it here.

IS a certain amount of Emails Considered SPAM?

The reason I ask this question, is because I had to send out numerous people, telling them to change their passwords, like 5 times, has they never showed up, to fix their passwords, and I was afraid that bots would use their accounts, not on this forum, has I haven't got a MyFF yet?

Thanks in advance,

Warren

Again think reasonable good bahavior, if you have a valid reason for doing it you are very unlikely to get in trouble.

If you think mass emailing drivel to your members every other day is a good idea, then they are sure to be complaining here and you will be in trouble!

A responsible forum admin will not have a problem here. We have no arbitrary limits merely common sense. Disputes are generally played out in the open in the T&C forum here, so that all can see whether we are playing fair.
FriendlyGuy

Thanks for the reply there, the reason I asked that was because with my forum (IPBFREE not here), I emailed them about too change the password, due to it being transferred to a new forum, and all passwords were reset, one member was angry about it.

How do I go about this, because I was only trying to help her out, and make sure she changed her password out?

Did I do something wrong or was I in the right?
admin (no pm's please)

I'd guess probably yes as it sounds like you are thinking about what you are doing. But I don't know all the circumstances.
