New "switch" on order, some downtime expected.

I'm moving the servers into a single rack with our own 1gb switch.

The impact of this is that servers will have to be shutdown and physically moved.

Hopefully this will be less than 1 hour at an offpeak time.
myff admin

The switch arrived this morning, busy playing with it and the NAS.

I'm thinking currently of a Friday install of the kit. Time scales seem to be slipping a lot here

But better to tweak as much possible here than 40 miles down the M4.
myff admin

Yep, definitely things that are worth trying to tweak, and definitely bad news to try and do it long distance

Now have the NAS and the switch working with:

Quote:

Mode 4: IEEE 803.ad Dynamic Link Aggregation. This mode provides fault tolerance as well as load balancing. It is highly effective but requires configuration changes on the switch and the switch must support 802.3ad Link Aggregation.

I'm quite pleased about this, as it marks the difference between the type of 30 gigabyte switch you might run at home, and paying 200 or so. It is nice to get something for the extra money!

I think I have run out of things to throw at the NAS/switch set up.

One quite notable thing is that I booted a virtual machine on the NAS and one on the local disk in parallel and they booted practically in tandem.

Any idea of when we should expect the downtime?
myff admin

I'm hoping night time between Friday/Saturday. The datacenter is still new to us so I have little idea on how cooperative on timing they are.
myff admin

New gear is at the datacenter, exact downtime should be scheduled soon.

I'm a little disconcerted by the prospect. It is a long time since we had downtime.
myff admin

Just had a message which confused me for a minute as I am trying to get downtime scheduled because of our new switch.

But we are due 2 minute of downtime in the next week because of an upgrade on a datacenter switch.
myff admin

tick tock tick tock, beginning to wonder if this will end up being tonight
myff admin

Ok, We are now scheduled for 1am.
Laz

Great timing

My Forum is hosting a world wide film festival over the weekend starting tonight at 8 PM EST. Looks like were going to go dark for an hour ... damn.

have you a rough idea how long this will be for please.
Laz

Can you give us a time zone or the 1 am time?

I need to now when this impact to my event is going to occur.

Thanks,
Laz
myff admin

As stated 1am GMT.

I'd anticipate 30 minutes down time.
daSchoof

Sounds good, thanks admin.

Good luck with the move, hope it all goes smoothly.

Awesome ... this will occur at exactly the time of the start of our event ... classic

Oh well ... at least it's only a half hour.

Ouch
Laz

Will you guys be posting at the start and at the completion?

How will we know that things are successful?

Thanks,
laz
myff admin

That took longer than expected.

The guys at the datacenter were confused by our "Drac".
drazen

Thanks for the notification admin and I hope it went as smooth as you wanted it to.

Just to let you know there's still a "1am downtime" message displayed on the top of our forum. No biggie
myff admin

I know, there is a little issue there.
