New admin panel tomorrowA new easier to use format, now we have so many options it make sense to try and make it easier to navigate.

Will it still have all the options? If not, what is going?

As you can see nothing is actually going, all the options (though some have been moved) are available by clicking each Title, but the new user will see something of a simple 1-2-3 guide to getting going.
The less used admin options like groups/logs/webpages are moved well down the list.

That looks brilliant!
So will anything change when the admin changes? No templates lost or anything?
Good job though. I know when I made my first forum a while back it was a bit confusing, especially without support like here.

Nothing has to be done by you, except to spot that Ranks is now not in Users, but in General, as I think it is a feature of how the board is configured, and mass email is now in Users, which is reserved for operations to do with users like emailing them.
Things will also be a little faster in the admin panel as a caching system will be used.

Sorry about that Symon, it did occur to me that this would be painful for you But hopefully it comes down to a few fairly small things changing.
The good news is that it does clear the way to add more features without making things look horribly scary.

I think so, to that end I have also now made a new heading Maintenance with:
- 8. Maintenance
Prune Forums
Resync Post counts
Topic Shadow
Who the heck uses those anyway? and having them right in the middle of what people need to do is plain wrong.

Looks good! I'm sure it won't take people long to get the hang of it all.

The latest view, anyone with any comments on the rough guide? In the image I have expanded a couple of headings, the initial view people will see will have them all closed.

Better as tables I think.

Cool That looks Much More Neater, And probably Easier To Use Again

Yeah looks great!
I do prefer the list to the tables, think it looks neater, but hey, it's up to you. lol
What time will it take effect?
|
admin (no pm's please)
|
I prefer the table, but as you say it ain't a big deal either way.
The theory is all databases get updated tonight (I hate these changes that add to the databases and I bet this could have been done with cookies, but what the hell, it is not a database change that effects general phpbb2 compatibility)
So then it is a matter of updating a bucket load of files on the server, this is also a big change in that regard, time wise I expect it will be before 10am, but there may be admin panel oddities if you go into the panel mid changes.

I like this new admin panel
One suggestion, perhaps have an expanded version of the quick start guide, to explain what each link on the navigation leads to, and the purpose of the function.
Ex:
Quick Start Guide
-Blah
-Blah
-Blah
-Blah
-To view an expanded version of this guide, click here.
----
Nothing too special, perhaps just link to a page located on www.myfreeforum.org
----
This is just an idea that was running around in my head, your say is final

I was thinking of asking for Symon to allow howtodit links.
But this is all confused by the fact we have better help in the all new web pages code and maybe that should be the route?
When in doubt do nowt! is frequently the best way forward on the forums, which is not exactly my core philosophy, but does make a great deal of sense when we are feeling our way to the future of the forums.

The web page pages have inbuilt help. A "?" icon appears in many places displaying help in an onscreen fashion.
We need to move in a consistent direction on how help is provided at the admin level.
Do you like the panel? and thanks for updating howtodoit.

I like it much more neater, and they all seem to be more organised.
I like the numbering aswell makes it easier for the beginning.
