Just done the xmas supermarket runWe do eat quite a bit of junk at xmas
But one thing I did notice was people buying all the so called "fresh" Turkeys in store for £3.28 a kilo.
This morning I got my Turkey from a farmer I know, that i know was killed and plucked Sunday, with coincidally even the plucking being done by someone I know. I paid £5 a kilo and got 12 really free range chicken eggs, and 6 again really really free range ducks eggs plus a pound or two of sausages from free range pork thrown in free
Somehow I think I am getting the better deal!

Well we will probably have home smoked wild Salmon as a starter.
The Bacon the Turkey gets wrapped with will be home cured. I am currently soaking a home cured ham, from a free range pig.
The bread sauce will use home made bread.
Unfortunately the vegetables are largley supermarket
My wife had made a homemade stuffing, not quite sure what went in it, but it sure tastes good.
Wine with the meal will be home brewed, the after dinner Liquor will be home made Sloe Gin.

No where really. I am certainly no chef. It is one of thse things I'd like to do a training course for though.
But I have always been against processed food with all the crap they put in it, and all the appalling treatment of animals it entails.
I firmly believe you can cook just as quickly without fast food, and if you just expand your cuisine to embrace a little more vegetarianism (which would not harm your health compared to a meat diet) then you can afford do buy better reared meat without the hormones/anit biotics etc.
Actually whilst I make a concious effort not to compare the price of the lamb, pork and beef we are getting direct from an ethical non intensive farm, my suspicion is that it might even be cheaper than the supermarkets, as we buy say half a lamb or quarter of a pig etc at a time.

Same here. That's what Jamie Oliver is trying to do, get rid of the reconstituted meat, and feed the kids healthier, what they should be getting.
I don't see why everyone is against Jamie Oliver's work. He's helping the kids with a healthier diet at school. If kids don't eat veg, then their diet simply won't be what they need. The mums complaining, won't be complaining when they see their children growing up to be obese, couch potatoes.

All I have against JO is his rank hyprocracy in doing adverts for a leading supermarkets. Adverts which are often very misleading. it seems like he will do anything to make a fast buck.

We eat Turkey once a year, which means it stays as a real treat for us
I think we lose so much enjoyment of things by having them regularily. Bring back the single orange in an xmas stocking

We'd actually love a few more guests. It is a 5kg bird and we are only cooking for 5 this year, usually we cater for a lot more and prefer it that way.

But what sort of Turkey was it? I won't get pious about this as two years ago I would have been the one thinking that there are a lot more important things to worry about than the quality of meat and animal welfare. But then I decided that the more important issues were ones I could do nothing effective about (and trust me I spent 25 years trying) but there were issues where I could make better ethical choices on a personal level and hopefully influence others.
So we have spent the last 18 months beginning to get our act together on things where we can make good choices. One of our initiatives is of course:

weve just spent over £100 on stuff just for xmas dinner.
mind you, 36 cans of Fosters, 12 bottles of Artois Bock and 3 bottles of wine kind of bumped the price up a bit.
im off to booze busters later to stock up on some real ale as well

Well we are somewhat stuffed to the gills with enough left over to feed twice as may again
All pretty much on the wiring timing wise as well, though needed to do some last minute emergency frying as the farm made suasages were bigger than your average banger.
Just a real shame that is was just the 5 of us.

http://www.downsizer.net/ | It was a Norbest Tender-Timed turkey, which a good brand. Though it apparently isn't a free-range turkey, which the company offers as a seperate choice.

As I say I can't get pious about it, as my militancy on the issue is quite recent. But I have been making a habit of inspecting Poultry on supermarkets shelves and have found that frequently even birds labelled organic free range are scarred by hock burns, a sympom basically of wading in shit due to crowded conditions.
So we have pretty much taken poultry out of our diet, as unlike beef, lamb and pork, we have not found a regular supplier. We get the odd chicken from a farmers market, but it is a treat as they are very expensive.
