I got PHPBB3 on my website!!! Its Crap!

As you can see i have put no forums on there. Actually, i have, they just dont show up.

Also, they no longer have catagorys, only forums and have tried to make it too smart by having a system where you can give warnings to members and they store them for 90 days.
They have also got good things where you can select a minimum amount of characters in a post, the maximum number of links and some other cool features.

But for now, im going back to PHPBB2

There is a point where for most users of forums find extra "features" are a bad thing to have, they get in the way of what you want to do 99% of the time, which is to post and view simple messages.

Lots of software has gone down that road, and I for one have ended up using some bits of software that are ancient, as the new equivalents have so much functionality it is hard to do the simple things you want the software for

I'm was hoping to get a phpbb3 test set up available to people to try, but I'm stuck for a server to put in on currently I think it would put a lot of people off.

It took me a while to find out how to add categorys, and forums, but got there in the end. I have to say though, it is really complicated.
Ziddy1232

I know... so *see Xfire*

I thought it would be easy if the demo was anyhting to go by, but it is really complicated.
Sukisue

If it's complicated, I'm staying away! It's taken me this long to master the phpbb2 - and I haven't even really done that, so I'm happy as I am!
Viper

Basically, to add the forum, you must set permissions for it, after you have created it. It seems strange, but that's what you have to do.

I'll be the first to admit I have played with phpbb3 and still don't really understand it very well, support will be a nightmare, and it won't do most admins of forums any good at all.

I run a phpbb2 forum "off the system" and it will stay phpbb2!
Ziddy1232

Actuallt, i now notice that Martin, you have restricted access to some pritty good phpbb2 features like the avatar and PM features...

But, i will be staying with 2 for a while, and may change once the official stable release is out.

I don't think anything is restricted with PMs, and Avatars are capped to a max size, but that is all.

The PM control panel in Configuration... where you can set the max number of PM's inbox ect

Yep and it is only the maximum we restrict which prevents forums become an alternate email system. We have had to place such restrictions on the downsizer forum as well as on the free forums. Sooner or later a very high PM limit proves a problem.

This is one of the issues with phpbb3, there are I think quite a lot of things people may be able to set that will only really come back and bite them.

i told ziddy this but.
Phpbb3 is geared towards privately own forums. Phpbb2 is both privately and hosters.
They should of made 2 versions of it.
1.One less complicated toward hosters.
2.A little more complicated towards privately owned.
Roy

I will have a PHBB3 forum but it will be to have a play around with as for my current forums they will stay as PHBB2 ontill i think the PHBB3 is the way to go if however i don't like it my forums will remain as PHBB2.

Is there a date as to when you will be hosting PHBB3 forums yet Admin?
admin (no pm's please)

Well the new server does have an option which if I click it, makes it create phpbb3 forums based on the last phpbb3 release, but there is a new phpbb3 release now!

But until there is a final phpbb3, there will be no real phpbb3 forums created here, only test ones that will be deleted later.
Roy

Thanks Admin, when you release them i will only be making one as a test coz then i can decide upon which i like more PHBB2 or 3.
admin (no pm's please)

Not quite sure when I will be doing it, its all about priorities and not spinning too many plates at once, and we do want to order the new new server very shortly now!
Part of it is also that phpbb3 is pretty awfully complex, and will I am sure put most people off at once, so in one sense it involves me in a few days work to create something that will tell people something that I wish they'd simply believe from my and other reports anyway
