Google BotSite: http://hbclanserver.myfreeforum.org/Template: myff_hbclanserver4/mobtown blues Please indicate keywords you have searched on: Bots, Google, Adverts, Members, Users, Bot Registering, ect, ect. Not a big deal and a fairly simple question. The past few months the googlebot has been digging through the forums and almost every time I am on the forum, at least one bot is on as a guest. Ive seen up to 17 instances of the google bot on at one time. 
From looking at other forums I have noticed they have accounts/profiles for the various bots (Google, Google Ad-Sense, Yahoo, MSN, AskJeeves, ect.) I am just wondering how to get the bot to sign up or to get the bots on as special users. It's just a bit annoying always having a guest on and never really knowing if it's just bots on or visitors. Yes I realize these bots are good for the forum, but they are almost ALWAYS on. I just want a way for them to show up as a user so guests are properly displayed. Thank you. |

Not going to happen on phpbb2.
phpbb3 is designed to have a special user type for bots and so can be clearer about bots. We have made phpbb2 at least tell you a bit about bots but we can't totally alter how phpbb2 works at the user level. |

Ah ok. Is there a way to pull the bot out using it's ip to maybe have...
Who is Online In total there is 1 user online :: 1 Registered, 0 Hidden, 0 Guests, and 0 Bots Rather than a special user type, just be able to show that "a" bot is on. Just another idea. Thanks again. |

bots don't usually have a set IP address, phpbb3 goes by the useragent string. I suppose that COULD be set up for phpbb2, but would require a large rewrite. |

I came across a forum today with the "Powered by phpBB © 2001, 2005 phpBB Group" at the bottom, which I assumed wasn't phpBB3 and they have the said idea.
At the bottom was... Who is Online Registered Users: GoogleBot The Legend is also set up with a [Bot]. There are 7 different Bot accounts and they alomost all "joined" on the same day. Just wondering how they may have done it.

Maybe they have hacked it in, anything is possible. We have decided that core changes to user and permission models are not a good idea. |
