godaddy offsite systems abandoned

It does seem godaddy are intent that if you actually try and use anything like the facilities they advertise then your hosting will be messed up by them in an assortment of ways

There are a dozen discussions about hosting on this forum where I myself made the point that our expenses mean that we cannot come close on price for hosting to the price that godaddy offer, and that I was highly suspicious that they can't in reality to this themselves and that it is really false advertising and if you do try and use the facilities they will not have you as a customer.

However the cost savings and speed benefits of using a 3rd party to serve image files did beckon, and piously saying that such companies would renege on their contracts was wearing a little thin.

So we tried, and whilst I still have support tickets being bullshitted by them, I think we have to conclude we failed.

The idea is still good and may go ahead on a core networks server.

https://corenetworks.net/

They seems to do a good deal.

Well we got a :

We apologize for any confusion in the previous two responses

From godaddy which translates :

Despite you giving full technical details of the issue, we just responded with random bollux that even implied you weren't even hosted with us...

We will see what happens next, not least I have spotted that sometime when you try and get a rank image you get redirected to a parked "ranks" domain which is clearly some form of advertising redirection. e.g. they are actively messing the requests up.

Heh, didn't see this. Let me quote myself;

I'm sure there's a chance you've considered it before, but why not go with CDN? There's some excellent services around, VPS.net have a brilliant CDN which is ridiculously cheap, I'm not sure about how much you're paying out for the godaddy server/hosting, but I can't see you transferring more than a TB a year for those images.

...and if you're definitely after a server, why not http://burst.net or http://hivelocity.net . Both are excellent companies and for the price you're looking at on corenetworks you get a lot more.

May as well keep the conversation in one thread.

I am not convinced the dedicated server prices are that drastically better the core networks once all is considered.

CDN is more interesting, it does work out several times more expensive the godaddy would (if it was working) but is significantly cheaper than the dedicated server approach, and may offer other advantages, or it may not!

CDNs work by delivering content from nearer to where someone is, this is great when delivering a large file, not so great when dealing with loads of small files. I'd guess the additional overhead would actually slow things.

Yet more BS back from godaddy. It if was not settled already it is now.

I plan to try and see if I can pull the templates off godaddy with a recursive ftp utility.
admin (no pm's please)

That has started now and is being done irreversibly in that the utility is set to delete as it goes, as I don't think I can trust such a process to restore properly. We could be looking at weeks here again   and the system can't be set operational until it is complete.

Godaddy just doesn't make things simple O_o

And funnily enough I know someone that does e-mail/phone support for them.
admin (no pm's please)

I think  I am going to treat this as a learning experience. Probably an arrogant one about respecting my own view on how things work
admin (no pm's please)

I'm still getting the run around by godaddy support who don't know the difference between the role of a nameserver and that of a web server, they might as well have a parrot on the end of the email squawking "clear cookies" for all the use of their replies.

Meanwhile since we can't it would appear sensibly rely on godaddy even if they resolve this, the template transfer process from godaddy has not got through 60,000 odd out of 1,500,000 files.
Zudane

O_o maybe you should write your next e-mail as though you were writing to a child... define all the words you use.

Maybe that would help?
admin (no pm's please)

They only read every other word looking for something to hang a scripted response on.

For example I have been demonstrating the issues using the "wget" command line utility which precisely shows the problem, with wget you see the domain name resolve to an IP and the 302 headers come back twice before the correct page is returned (well sometimes).

The use of wget removes any ambiguity about browsers/cookies, but of course they can hang the "We don't support that" label on it, as if wget itself has any relevance as no one cares about wget other than using it as a means of showing them the problem.

Good grief, godaddy hosting can't do anything right.

I'm issuing an "ls -R|wc" command to count the files left to transfer, but this returns almost random numbers, clearly they terminate the "ls" part of the command before it completes

The upshot though is that I'm far further away from completing the transfer than I thought. Clearly this will be measured in weeks
while()

What sort of speeds you're pushing? That length of time sounds dire
admin (no pm's please)

It is very random, sometimes  file goes through at 1.5mbs, others times 6kbs

I am using ncftput is a very inefficient way, but given the way godaddy kills processes it is hard to do it more efficiently.

Plus of course this is a speed bonus, I don't think anyone can really complain of slow forums due to server load currently.

Thank you for your response.  At the time when you were experiencing the 302 redirects the server your hosting account is on was under network protection.  The server has since been removed from this extra protection but may be added back at a later date for security reasons.  Unfortunately we cannot go into further details about the Network Protection for the server your shared hosting is on.  We thank you for your understanding in this matter.

Please let us know if we can help you in any other way.

So basically that says after 5 useless responses in which they denied all responsibility for anything (even at one point denying being the hosts) that in fact they are responsible and will continue to break the hosting for reasons they are not going to explain
admin (no pm's please)

They are now even disrupting my attempts to ftp the files, what had been working after a fashion for the last 5 days or so started failing. Yet more stupid responses from support.

I am now taking files off in a more piecemeal fashion.
admin (no pm's please)

Over 1 million files transferred, which whilst a milestone only really demonstrates the sheer awfulness of it all Looking at the implied time scales it would be quicker to start again from our own servers, and at least then we would not have to wait another month for the system to go back live, it could kick into action pretty much as soon as clean down was done and the copy process was restarted.
admin (no pm's please)

Yep, having double checked the calculations it is clearly 30 more days at least.

I have killed that idea off as a bad joke In the morning I will kick things off on the main servers again.

Bit late at night to start that now, as it needs a few carefully set passes, first to clear offsite flags, then to deal with system templates etc.

It is not a process that forgives errors particularly nicely.
Zudane

Godaddy is the devil!

They brag a lot, and are only useful for the most basic users.

Not to mention, I once checked out the commercials that are continued online (the TV commercial says unrated version online)... and I realized something.  Most videos online are unrated, regardless of content....

Anyway, one commercial that shows two women in the shower at the end of it.. continues online... to the women being entirely wrapped in towels and laying on a bed playing with a laptop....  Really stupid, I'd say... but it makes you go to their site.

I've abandoned everything with godaddy, even moving my e-mail accounts off it - even though I've paid for 2 years >_<
admin (no pm's please)

I am forced into agreement, we are still using the accounts as backup repository of "last resort" e.g. our own offsite system offsites itself to godaddy. If you recall the original intent was to use godaddy as the offsite backup system. But for all sorts of reasons was proving painfully useless. As a "last resort" system though it does some good for the pennies it costs.

However in general they are still shit. Even now after all their promise my log that still checks on the "availability" of the offsite template system is filling constantly with errors from them.

The only consolation in this whole sorry affair is relearning lessons about getting "what you pay for" and that if it does not make sense then trust your own judgment on it.
admin (no pm's please)

It is also notable that the new copying process is looking like it might take something like 5 days in total, a far cry from the pain of the godaddy transfer.
admin (no pm's please)

And we are about to break through the million file mark again. e.g. this process is going about 10x faster than godaddy.

It may well be more than 5 days before slarti completes its bit. But such is life

We seem to have spend the summer (if you can call it a summer) firefighting for one reason or another. It will be good to have some clear horizons for new things again.

Having said that, the WIKI system and CATALOG portal have been rather good recent additions.
