Forum Owners asking for donations??Having been a member of a couple of forums, I often see the owners of them asking for donations. What is or could be the main reason for wanting donations? Ain't the forum a free forum!!!
Does the money raised go into maintaining the site? or into the pockets of the admin of said forum?

A forum is free to host..
However as with me i spend a lot of time and effort on sites like HOWTODOIT, the donation button is there for as it says Donations.
A forum owner can ask for donations for many reasons.

Forum admins are free to ask for what they want, and it is up to the membership to judge if they are being cheeky.
There may be many genuine reasons a forum would want to raise a little money.

Thanks for the replie, could you give some examples as to what/why, a forum that is free, would require money? Where would the money go? and on what?
Thanks

You keep labouring the point
"A forum that is free"
It is free to host a forum here, and run a forum here, that is the free forum part.
However a forum owner may wish to charge or ask for donations for many reasons , it is their right.

Well one reason could be that the admin could want to invest in some books/courses to improve his knowledge of html/php so that he can work on adding new features to his forum or making it look nicer.
He may also want to invest in a laptop so that he can go on the forum while outside of the house but just doesn't have the money.
There are probably loads more reasons too...

lol, would a forum have to pay for example, to remove ads from a site? or will there always be adverts on a MFF forum?.
So a owner is wanting paying for running a site that costs nothing lol...

You are just continuing tediously and obliquely to grind the same axe as you have been since joining here

ok let me try and explain , i will make it plain and simple for you.
Admin owns myfreeforum
Admin has to pay for servers etc
Admin gets some money back form the adverts
Forum owners have a site for free
forum owners may wish to go advert free, this costs, you dont have to if you dont want to.
Forum owners may wish to raise money, you as a member dont have to give ,
Why is this so hard for you to understand ??,, its not rocket science is it.

Right, so forum owners do have to pay to go add free see ......why didn't you just explain that with your first reply instead of assuming I should already have known. And why do you always get hot under the collar when replying to any questions I put forward... As you have already stated, it's not rocket science

Point me (oh wait must do the childish icon) to where you asked about paying for advert free.
You did not not once ask that question, you rambled on as normal , with a load of rubbish and over the top
You are not here to help you are not here as you run a forum.
My guesses is you are here to stir up as much trouble as your tiny mind can think of.
Admin has a longer fuse than me ,, i nearly hit the ban button yesterday, today you will not be so lucky.
So either write something worth while , and stop wasting our time.
the more rubbish you post, means someone with a real problem, waits.

All of which is in the FAQ, and you clearly have an agenda that is not positive.
Do you even have a myff forum?
Every impression you have given is that you are here to stir.

You never mentioned anything about ad free in your original post.
It is clear to me, you are only coming to this forum to be obstropulous and petulant. You are using this forum as a side battle in your war with....well...the world.
I personally don't see any need for anyone here to answer any of your questions on any issue any more, as you use any answer you get to try and twist things round to suit your little games.
I think you are beyond help, and beyond reasoning...it is testament to Admins patience that you haven't been banned here, he is a better man than I is all I can say.
You really need to take a good long look at yourself and decide whether everyone else has the problem, or whether it is you!

I merely asked what would be the reasons for a forum owner to ask for/need ,donations, whether that be for an add free forum, or any other reason. It wasn't untill later in the thread that, the question was in, a round about way, answered!!
What's so hard about it, that neither of you could answer in a easy simplistic way? why did it take such effort to get to the point? Isn't the 'support'' forum for a place for questions to be answered? If so, why do you seem aggrieved to answer such easy questions?.
And when you make snide remarks about the answer being non rocket science, you must also remember that the question itself was not so hard a question in the first place.

...ANyways...I couldn't see myself asking for donations from my members.
Maybe if my forum got huge and I wanted my own domain I would ask, but I'm doing fine.

I think this might have been a member from my forum.
Around the time this thread was started, a user on my forum (richardwalsh4lyf) starting spamming hateful posts against me and my forum on my forum, with no provocation.
Here is a PM I recieved from him (whycantkimdie? is a member of my forum):
Message Removed
He kept claiming that I was telling to to donate cash to me...
I banned his account and email address, and he has since created several accounts with new emails, just to flame and post his rants on my forum. I've banned every emil address and account he used, but he's using a shared IP so I can't ban his IP.
I'm pretty sure he has stopped; he hasn't done anything since May 20th, and even then he just created accounts with profane and hateful usernames, while clearly showing it was him, but he didn't post anything.

Even though you tried to blank some swear words , i would still say to strong for a public forum.

How is it fair, when a forums admin got their forum blacklisted by google forcing them to go advert free, I don't see how it's fair to pass on an admin's miss management on to it's members, now this is not a stab at you mike, as you know who it was.

Some Owners of such a freeforum set up would have nuked your forum, others would have forced you to pay for a backup, others would not even give you a second chance.
Isnt good for your members that Admin thought of them , and didn't act solely on the bad management and rudeness of your last co admin.

Yes donations are a good thing I think,I also use a lot of free forums but one in particular puts a lot of evert into giving away photographic equipment (Expensive equipment at that)To compatition winners. It also makes its own merchandise,I dont think the forum would be able to do this if it wasent for donations.
