Don't make your site too slow for new visitors!

http://www.websiteoptimization.co...url=http://forum.myfreeforum.org/

Note that on a Modem even the support forum is going to take more than 12 seconds to load first time.
But I have seen some forums today with humongous graphics We keep the image quotas on the template low for a reason and we would probably be doing everyone a favour if we lowered them more! People will not sit around for minutes waiting for a site to load.

Make sure you use gif/png or much preferably jpg graphics, and optimise your graphics here:

http://www.gifworks.com/cgi-bin/g...;amp;startcolors=10&site=

Your prospective members will appreciate it, and for that matter so will our servers

heres mine:

is it a good result
admin (no pm's please)

If you think a potential page load time of almost a minute is good, then I suggest you look at a clock for a minute and see just how long that is. People will not wait that long.

I am currently trying to reduce the support forum page size and we are less than a quarter of your page size!
Danny M

okay then thanks

i will try and make the page load quicker
admin (no pm's please)

Well our index page keeps inside 30kb now Down from 37kb! A 20% speed increase the people seeing the site for the first time.
Danny M

would it be better if we took that banner from underneath the main logo down (my forum is in my sig) - would it make a big difference or a small one

thanks

As part of this exercise I have made our main sites 30%-40% smaller, it will be interesting to see if this effects the number people signing on.
CodyT07

They need to run their test on their own site.

28 ^ 106887* Total (^unique objects)

# Congratulations. This site is using HTTP compression, otherwise called content encoding using gzip. The sizes reported here are for compressed content sent from the server to the client.

* CSS alternate stylesheets may be referenced in the HTML but are not actually downloaded until they are needed and are therefore not included in the total page size.

Analysis and Recommendations
TOTAL_HTML - Congratulations, the total number of HTML files on this page (including the main HTML file) is 1 which most browsers can multithread. Minimizing HTTP requests is key for web site optimization.
TOTAL_OBJECTS - Warning! The total number of objects on this page is 28 - consider reducing this to a more reasonable number. Combine, refine, and optimize your external objects. Replace graphic rollovers with CSS rollovers to speed display and minimize HTTP requests.
TOTAL_IMAGES - Warning! The total number of images on this page is 22 , consider reducing this to a more reasonable number. Combine, refine, and optimize your graphics. Replace graphic rollovers with CSS rollovers to speed display and minimize HTTP requests.
TOTAL_CSS - Congratulations, the total number of external CSS files on this page is 2 . Because external CSS files must be in the HEAD of your HTML document, they must load first before any BODY content displays. Although they are cached, CSS files slow down the initial display of your page.
TOTAL_SIZE - Warning! The total size of this page is 106887 bytes, which will load in 26.90 seconds on a 56Kbps modem. Consider reducing total page size to less than 30K to achieve sub eight second response times on 56K connections. Pages over 100K exceed most attention thresholds at 56Kbps, even with feedback. Consider contacting us about our optimization services.
TOTAL_SCRIPT - Caution. The total number of external script files on this page is 3 , consider reducing this to one or two. Combine, refine, and optimize your external script files. Ideally you should have one (or even embed scripts for high-traffic pages) on your pages.
HTML_SIZE - Congratulations, the total size of this HTML file is 6391 bytes, which less than 20K. Assuming that you specify the HEIGHT and WIDTH of your images, this size allows your page to display content in well under 8 seconds, the average time users are willing to wait for a page to display without feedback.
IMAGES_SIZE - Warning! The total size of your images is 82046 bytes, which is over 30K. Consider optimizing your images for size, combining them, and replacing graphic rollovers with CSS.
SCRIPT_SIZE - Warning! The total size of external your scripts is 8371 bytes, which is over 8K. Consider optimizing your scripts for size, combining them, and using compression where appropriate for any scripts placed in the HEAD of your documents.
CSS_SIZE - Warning! The total size of your external CSS is 10079 bytes, which is over 8K. Consider optimizing your CSS for size by eliminating whitespace, using shorthand notation, and combining multiple CSS files where appropriate.
MULTIM_SIZE - Congratulations, the total size of all your external multimedia files is 0 bytes, which is less than 4K.

I hope thats ok and can be understood.

admin (no pm's please)

Just run the forum through again on the new template, and we get a bit of a slapping on the size of the CSS file, but this is actually to some degree a flaw in the testing, files like CSS files are highly compressible and several techniques will reduce their size a lot as it hits a low speed modem!

So whilst it is an area to consider, it really is the images that are the killer to speed.
BjornkeGeish

i believe everyone gets the Total Objects and Images as warnings....But hey, 12 seconds on a Modem is good compared to 12 MINUTES with some other websites!!
