DNS Problem - Does this ring true?I will post this in Off Topic as it is not a MYFF error, but a friend has a forum and everytime they try and go to it lately they are getting re-directed to a Forum Hacker page. Their explanation is
| Quote: | There is not a problem at ForumUp, neither on your Forum, or on our Servers. We know this, because your Forum can still be seen, and accessed, normally from other locations around the globe.
It is not the result of anything that may be on your computer.
It is a DNS problem somewhere in the UK region, between you, and our Server. The DNS, are 'nodes' that direct your data around the globe, to and from yourself, and our server.
The DNS are little databases containing 'directories', or 'road-maps' of the Internet. One of these has been compromised, and is re-routing you to an alternate location, and server.
If you have this problem, could you please provide some extra data, particularly who your ISP is, and your approximate location.
This will aid us in targeting where the problem occurs. And it's area of effect.
Thank you.

Sounds like a reasonable explanation, but I do not know enough about it to confirm or deny.
Would this compromised DNS be difficult to trace?
I have suggested they request the data to move over to MYFF, but at present this free forum site do not have that facility and do not class it as a priority. So they are stuck were they are unless they are prepared to lose their existing posts.
Any comments would be appreciated.
Cheers
Mark

Exactly mate, they spent a whole thread moaning about it being malware on individuals PC's and do download and run a load of spyware software. Their own members were saying "well it aint happening to us on other forums" and they then came up with this compromised DNS explanation.
Now it may well be true that this is the problem, but it still only effects access to their sites for certain members and members that live in the same area are not affected at all!!
Thats what you get when you don't go MYFF

forumup hae a lousy rep, but the DNS explanation is plausable and I seem to recall we had a similar issue once, it is something very much beyond control by them.
when faced with such an issue changing web proxies may well help.

Thanks for that, looks like patience is the key on this one then.
They have suggested people affected set up under a proxy server, but I don't want to really get into too much as I don't know a lot about it and really really hate trying to guide people through things when I can't see the PC in question.
Plus this person is also on AOL (the webs biggest virus IMHO) and I really don't want to have to chat to that shower.
Thanks for confirming it is plausable though I was worried they may have been giving them the runaround, but it does seem it could be a genuine "outside of their control" problem.

Someone has posted a get around for this problem, anyone here familar with the Hosts File? If so, would you know if it safe to do as follows?
| Hosts wrote: | This is what I have posted on chasemonkey site
The solution for the redirect problem is as follows
go to this folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
open the HOSTS file using notepad
add the ip address 67.15.127.26 directly under 127.0.0.1 then tab across under local host and put in websitename.forumup.co.uk, close out of it and when asked if you want to save changes click on yes.
It should look like this when done
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host |

it is a workaround rather than a solution and will work.
BUT
There is a reason for having a DNS it directs a name to an address and hence the address may change.
Certainly on myfreeforum your forum may bounce around several ip addresses as we load balance the system.
As such if you use the workaround you may find 6 months down the line things fail again and you have forgotten that you altered hosts.

Thanks for that, I will mention it and help set up the workaround, once they have finally resolved the issue and found the compromised DNS I will get the changes removed. At least that way this person can get on their own site to admin and mod it for now.
I am watching the topic so will get e-mails about it if someone finally resolves the problem and I can also diary it for a rolling 3 day diary note as well. This person is just going scratty not being able to get on their forum.
