I was working on edit web pages this morning, logged in as editor and working on carsandmotorsport template 2, and the site went very slow. Now I keep getting a blank window on IE with the message of:

"phpBB : Critical Error

Could not connect to the database"

when I try to open the forum

My forum address is: http://carsandmotorsport.myfreeforum.org/index.php

Can anyone help me please

At the moments there are a few too many things going on on the server and it has tipped to a point where people hitting refresh is making things stay overloaded. The systems processes that are part of the issue should end within a short time and then things should be back to normal.

It probably indicates it is time to move some forums to load balance the servers.

Im back up and running again,You should give it a try now...Cancell that im still down
laur

Things look normalish now. But load is still high.

I wonder if the sheer awful bank holiday weather has made everyone logon at the same time!

I`m on facebook at the moment and it is running horrendously slow, in fact to slow to do most things on there, and the amount of error message is 100 times more than normal.

Ah well, I suppose I will have to take a break from the PC and do some chores around the house

Even that is not totally out of the question, it can be a combination of things:

1) Server running stats collection/database backup/offsite dump all at the same time.
2) Load spike due to weather.
3) Internet glitches making people hit refresh.

and all of a sudden it all gets too much and the server cannot keep up with the rate people are trying to access it with refresh.

This is the most overworked server by rather too much, as it is also the oldest and hence slightly less powerful server anyway.

The server processes are still ongoing, but touch wood things are running ok for now.

i know before you said that i thought it was my internet

Phew, that was a tense moment. Thankfully all is well again

Nope, it means there is a rather large amount of data being transfered one way or the other and when the load jumps it can effectively cause a timeout, which would mean anyone trying to do something for a short period of time would continuely struggle to do what they want.
