propagation takes time because there are servers that point to it all over.

Your computer connects to another computer that looks it up, and might find the site.

When I connect, the server I connect to might not have heard of your site yet, so it tells me it doesn't exist.  Generally the information gets around the world within a day, but it can take up to 48 hours - nearly everywhere should have it by then.
