All servers rebooted to install latest kernel updates

This has been expected for the last week, but I was unsure when exactly it would be happening.

This has to happen from time to time to keep things secure, and the good news is all servers are back up and looking okay
RPF Forum

Hmm, cool. Glad to see it's back online.

Not as glad as I am

One of the downsides to this sort of business is that I am on call 24/7 in the event of an emergency, and good as our equipment and maintenance is, there are still things that can go wrong.
Two years ago I had to abandon one of my kids birthdays to deal with a crisis   and Xmas eve reboots is damn scary, as basically if there is anything that does go wrong that needs my input as opposed the server engineers to deal with, then I have to be onto it without break regardless of day night or event.

Spoke to soon it seems some problems seem to be occurring on Zaphod which hosts the support forum and many others.
RPF Forum

Aren't there other admins?
admin (no pm's please)

Support engineers on the servers, but only one admin.
RPF Forum

I suggest you make some of the Forum Moderators admins. It will cause less things for you to do, so then you won't have to work 24/7.  Wink

a forum admin cannot do what is needed to manage the system, totally different issue really

Then hire some people! You can't be doing this 24/7 a day, then your life wouldn't be so good. Take a rest for a while, and enjoy the hoildays.

I see where you are getting at, but I am pretty sure that having only one person is a good idea. No other people to mess things up, and you always know what has been done because you are the one who has done it
RPF Forum

Good suggestion, but when you have many exp. people you will have less problems on your hands.

But when you have to many chefs it can spoil the pot (can't remember how it totally went).

But I must say admin working today this late must be pretty harsh on him, Which is something people don't consider

There are far worse things out there then your forum being down a few minutes.
Hardcoregamer

Wow. I was a bit worried yesterday seeing nothing was working. Thanks.

There was a similar incident a month ago on this server, so we may call Dell in to take a look.

As ever I'd point out we are not invulnerable, but the servers are RAID and backup protected, and they are new Dell server hardware with "gold" support levels.
