Age Limits

Is there any way that I can change the age restriction of 13 up to 18? This is not because of the content but because of a want to keep the forum for adults only.
Thank you for any help you can give

I'd like to know how to do this too thanks.

And instead of the 'canned terms & conditions' which come as default wit the site, is there any way we can tailor our own?
myff admin

That part of the process works in the generally accepted legalities of forum registration and hence has not been made customizable.

OK, I understand the reasons why you've done this: it's vanilla, generic and covers the average US mentality requirements (and frankly the lowest common denominator), but it doesn't really allow us (indeed anyone living outside the US) to tailor our sites the way we'd like them; or to tailor them to the market/audience at whom we're aiming them.

And seeing as you've mentioned the key aspect of 'legalities', it doesn't allow us, as board owners, to be covered legally when we want specifically to cater for adult conversation/humour/postings (not teenager-centric stuff) and your T&C's only allow us a joining criteria which caters for "are you over 13 years of age?"

So what do/can we do?
myff admin

You can always edit agreement.tpl and put your own text in place of the {AGREEMENT} {AGREE_OVER_13) and {AGREE_UNDER_13} macros.

I have no idea what that means or how to do it! Very new to forums (running them at least) How exactly would I do this?

I agree with Persistent Reality - can you please provide a 'How To' on this so that those who want to make these age range changes can do?

Not to go over old ground, but you'll now be more than a little aware that not everyone using your product is code-literate (or seeks to be); so if we can please avoid the stock "you need to learn code" responses, we might make some progress here.

So far there is PR, me &  DaughterUK who have requested this age-change feature/facility.

Thanks in advance.

I too would like to be able to change the age limit in my forum.....

Then edit agreement.tpl and replace the text macros with what you want to see.

I am really sorry....I am new at this whole forum thing....how do I get to where I can do this...I did try on my own first to no avail.

You need to look up template editing on the howtodoit site.

OK Martin, I'm having a go at this as we speak! Fingers crossed!

I've gone in to edit 'agreement.tpl' - and where in the text the age says "13", the only thing I've done id just remove the number three and replaced it with an 8. Looked like the logical thing to do, given your advice above.

Of course, it could never be that straight forward...

But, when I did that, and when I then went to check it, by trying to sign up as a new user, I noticed that out of the three choices you'd normally see on offer (i.e. I'm exactly or over 13 and agree to these terms; I'm under 13 and agree to these terms and I do not agree to these terms), two had disappeared and I was left with only the last one - "I do not agree with these terms"??!

Luckily, to get it back to default (i.e 13 years of age), I just went back in and swapped the 8 for a 3 again and all looks to be back to normal (or default normal at least).

So, what am I doing wrong in the editing process here? Obviously I want to change the age to 18.

So is there more to "editing a text micro" than might at first to the layman be obvious? Is there a text macro editing method about which I'm unaware which you can please share with me? A How To?

Thanks in advance.

TBH it isn't that big of a deal.

Edit the agreement template, it'll have a macro for the agreement, and then the over 13 and under 13.

Remove {AGREEMENT}  and replace it with whatever you want the agreement to say, copy and paste if you want and change numbers.

Then remove {AGREE_OVER_13) and {AGREE_UNDER_13} and replace them with whatever you want the agree buttons to say.

Such as {AGREE_OVER_13) says "I am OVER or EXACTLY 13 years of age", remove that and put "I am OVER or EXACTLY 18 years of age".

By the way, the 13 isn't just because of general mentality, it's the US COPPA.  Child Online Privacy Protection Act.  Any site with social interaction, to follow US law, must not allow anybody under the age of 13 to participate without consent of an adult.  Of course not everybody follows it though, but that's why it is there.

OK, well the age 13 issue doesn't apply here, in the UK, as US laws are not applicable over here. And it's unenforceable anyway, even in the US, as you've no idea who signs up for a site or any method of checking the veracity of what age they claim to be. My board's aimed at adults 18 and over, hence making that plain in the T&Cs for members when they sign up.

OK, let's make this very easy - as frankly I have no idea what most of what you've written above means - macros, brackets, which bits to edit etc. Apart from not knowing what editing it will do, I can't see how just deleting {agreement} will achieve everything you claim it will. But you sound like you know what you're talking about and I have no clue. This may just work!

So like I say, let's make this VERY easy.

Below is the complete text from the Agreement.tpl.

All I want to do change the age from 13 years of age so that it reads 18 years of age. Nothing else.

So, using the code below, please can you make the appropriate adjustments and render how it should look at achieve the required effect - i.e. in a format which I can then just cut & paste back into my Agreement.tpl.

Fair enough? Thanks in advance.

Code:
<table width="100%" cellspacing="2" cellpadding="2" border="0" align="center">

Anyone from MyFF??
symon

I have already had this discussion with you in another thread , again you seem hell bent on knocking any advice given , rather than to sit and take a deep breath and work it out

It is as smple as stated before by changing the macros

Code:
<a href="{U_AGREE_OVER13}" class="genmed">{AGREE_OVER_13}

Could become

Code:
<a href="{U_AGREE_OVER13}" class="genmed">{I agree im over 105 and have both parents alive.}

Not knocking anything Symon - we just seem to need to see different things - you speak in code coz you use it all day every day, I don't - hence the questions.

Now I'm more than happy to give this another go, as if you read above, I've already tried to edit this (from 13 to 18 years old) and two of the 'agree' options then disappeared.

So I'll give it another go, but if it doesn't work, you won't be surprised to find, what with you guys being a 'support function-cum-tech support function' and all, that I'll be back with any "it hasn't worked, now what?" type questions.

Sometimes you guys really do need to appreciate that some of us don't do this for a living, or even regularly and when we do, we don't need to told what you think we 'should be doing' - instead what would be helpful and appreciated is quick friendly, efficient advice on how to resolve our issues.

Amended as above just drop the { } brackets

so it will look like this

Code:
<a href="{U_AGREE_OVER13}" class="genmed">I agree im over 105 and have both parents alive.

Hey Symon,

Another small victory! I've gone ahead and made this change, based on your instructions above - getting a wee bit more comfortable with this coding lark now!

Just a quick question - there are three default sign-in/joining options (I've now removed the 13 year age reference and changed mine to 18+, Under 18 and I do Not Agree to the terms of the board... Etc.

So, can I ask, is there any MyFF condition or legal requirement on me/my board to offer option two at all (i.e. Under 18 option)?

I'm thinking that as my board is aimed squarely at adults, any 'back door' option which allows entry to any one under 18 is not just superfluous to requirements, it's simply not wanted/needed.

So can I just delete option 2 and just go with 18+ and No, I Do Not Agree etc? IT would certainly simplify life.

Thanks in advance.

FTB.

PS: If you say 'Yes' and I can go ahead - here's my Agreement.tpl, please indicate precisely which parts of the code need to be deleted - as that's the last bit about which I have no clue (I'm not yet comfortable editing macros or chunks of code without direction, as I don't know what the code means or what I might be removing - could cause chaos!

The under 18 by default leads to the registration as a registered COPPA user, which has a different permission set.

The accept under 13, and decline are here, respectively:

Code:
<a href="{U_AGREE_UNDER13}" class="genmed">{AGREE_UNDER_13}</a><br /><br /><a href="{U_INDEX}" class="genmed">{DO_NOT_AGREE}</a>

The macros are this: the first macro leads to the registration for the COPPA user, the second is the text for the agreeing and being under 13, third leads to the board index, and the last is the "I do not agree" text.

I would suggest, rather than just accept/18+ and decline, you have accept/18+, under 18, and decline.  Replace the first macro with with {U_INDEX} and the second macro with the text you want for someone to put that they are under 18.

I don't care if you don't like me, but it's a waste of everybody's time to ask the same question again after someone has answered it correctly.

The macros are replaced with text in this case.  Two macros for the URL it leads to, two macros for the text that's shown.

Replace them with what you want it to say and no harm done.

Zudane, it's got nothing to do with 'liking' you - and everything to do with you running around these support boards acting like you're the place's conscience or staff here, when in fact you're neither, so stay out of my board's business and concentrate on attracting members to your own site.

I've asked a question of a member of staff here and am quite happy to wait for them to answer it.

Thanks Martin, that answers the 'can I?' question, and whether or not I'm allowed to do it and not contravene any MyFF house T&Cs.

My next question then is precisely (because I have no idea) which line of code or macro do I delete which removes the any reference to being under 18?

Not being au fait with it, I don't want to delete something only to find I've removed something I shouldn't or some other piece of code which is either vital or needed?

Thanks in advance. If we can get this done, I've not more question here.

Cheers,

Since you seem intent on wasting more time... I have told you already how to do this.

To remove the "Agree under 13" remove:
Code:
<a href="{U_AGREE_UNDER13}" class="genmed">{AGREE_UNDER_13}</a><br /><br />

I was not preaching, I was suggesting that you give no option for anybody under 18, just agree over 18, and decline.

Zudane, you've obviously not read here what I needed, or what I had already done, hence me asking you to keep out of my board's business. I won't ask again, you'll just get ignored for the busy-body you are.

Apart from you being an irritation with these constant thread hijacks, I think we can agree that you've got more than enough work to do sorting out your own site first - attracting posting/contributing members would be an obvious place to start. Concentrate on that before scouring these boards looking for things to do.

And I'm not 'wasting time' either; I'm asking people who are staff at this support facility questions to which I don't know the answer. Bizarrely enough, that's what this forum is for.

I'm a newbie too. I also wish the 13 age to become 18. Having read this thread it becomes no clearer, in fact it ends in personal stuff.

This is no help to beginner's.

1. Does "the editor" have to make the changes?
2.Does the agreement.tpl have to be the original one we got when getting the forum as I have changed templates and edited logos?
3.You have to remember you are training people here who have no clue.

Thoughts

1. When you register for a forum there should be an option for an over 18 forum. This way it would come with the forum
2. When asked a question by a newbie start from the point where you are talking to "Dummy" and just post the complete answer in one go.
3. Most of the people who ask these questions are doing it to make their forum a wee bit better than it was yesterday.
4. Are all the answers to newbies questions the same?

PS

Can you link a howto for me to add a video button for my forum
Be nice to newbies
myff admin

1. You must give the (myfree/myfast/myfine)forum.org link/address of your forum. A link should be given to the problem if at all possible. Do this whether you think it is important or not. DO NO GIVE YOUR OWN DOMAIN LINK IT MUST BE THE NAME YOU CREATED HERE.
  2. Search on the forum and on howtodoit for your problem before posting. 90% of the posts we get have easily found answers if you search on a couple of key words from your post. If this is not the case report the keywords you searched on and we will make sure search works for the next person to try the same search terms. Each time someone doesn't bother to use the search, questions accumulate in the forum making it harder for people to actually find answers! as people searching will end up finding the question and not the answer.
  3. Keep it to one support question per thread, if you have another question start a new topic. This will help others using "search" to find answers.

Start removing the prohibited content in the linked section above please, hiding it still doesn't mean it's allowed.

Now that's done can we get back on topic? Can you give a one off answer to the age limit thing?

Any admin user can make the changes, and whilst agreement.tpl may vary a little between templates, the basic instructions for editing it remain the same.

We always recommend using the editor user and a copy of the template so that you can test changes, but that applies  to  changes you will see when logged in, as the editor can be set to see a template others do not see.

By definition to see the agreement you have to be logged out, so use of the editor user won't help. But do make a backup of the template before editing anyway.
