A quick Q for Admin, You may have noticed from a couple of my other posts about the rival between the probe clubs, one club in particular are trying to push out members by setting them up in unusual circumstances (too much too explain)

But Admin are saying they can read members PM's? can the do this or not? I can't see a way of doing this on my forum. Is there a hack or something that they can do this with?
I am not asking for the hack as i do not wish to do this as it is abusing members trust, i would just like to know if they can or are they bluffing?

They're bluffing. You can only see PM's when the hack is installed and it hasn't been installed.

Admin's are not able to read anyones PM's unless it's their own, also I 100% doubt that anyone in the phpbb comunity will ever create such a hack as forum that install it will loose members very fast.

Thanks Just the info I needed

The guys on this site are saying that my husband's PM's were read from the backend database, so they can't do this either then??

I know a guy that is admin of a forum and he can read PM's as they are stored for 24 hours in the database. He can also read PM's which have been sent more than 24 hours ago, by paying his hosts for the information. However, this is not a PhPBB or Free Forums site. I have always been against the fact that he can do it, as Private Messages are meant to remain private - right!

thanks for the info sukisue that sounds familiar about what he is telling us, he says its from the backend database he can read the PM's. IMO i disagree too as its an invasion of privacy, thats exactly why they are called private messages!!

It's definitly a bluff. Wink
admin (no pm's please)

An admin of a non free forums system can if they know what they are doing get to read PMs by going direct to the database

But on myfreeforum the only way an admin can read Pms is if they break into someones account by changing the password. Since they have no way of changing the password back correctly, this leaves a trail.

PMs should always be left private.

Just to clarify - the guy that I was talking about is a qualified web designer - he's done websites for Sky TV and BBC so he definitely knows what he's doing.

I still think its wrong to look at other people's private communication though.
