A Rant I have.

This really made me mad today.
On my site I made, my hoster listed personal information about me on my whois.

from here
No where on the sign up sheet for domain name did it say they were going to show my entire name including my phone number. so that isn't my consent.

I called them to have it remove, they require $7.00 to remove personal information off of Who Is databases.

I try to stay nice, but now I'm mad
Bravo

Sounds to me like this should be in the scam section.

I think this is partially misunderstanding, your hosting and domain name are separate things, a whois entry is for the domain name, and whilst some registrars do now offer a masking service it has always been the practice for domain owners details to be available, not least for legal purposes.

I bet you could bring my m4webdesign site up on a similar charge, I probably have some perfectly honest disclaimer on there, but if you register a domain name via the site and don't use the masking options then whois will list your details.

Do you have to pay for your masking options?

As I recall they are free, I as a company have no reason to be concerned about this, and so have not really investigated.

My mom called AOL, and they said that can be illegal to post my personal information like that since I'm under 18.

I've had domains for donkeys years and was always hacked off by my details being shown as a matter of course in Whois. The services to hide or mask those details seems to be pretty new and I have just signed up to have my details hidden on two of my current domains. It costs £5 per domain per year.

BTW, I thought you had to be over the age of 18 to register domains.....

A domain is a legal entity and people seeking recourse against misuse of the domain could argue that they have every right to find out who owns it.

Probably the real solution would be for the details to be hidden behind image verification routines to stop them being harvested.
davecov

I totally agree and any legal body can still find out my details if they want by contacting my hosts via the details shown in my Whois records. I just don't want cranks knowing my details, that's all - and I've had my fair share over the years!

And they want money money money to hide my details.

What are your prices for a site?
Brandon7

thats messed up!
admin (no pm's please)

m4webdesign does domains as a "dotster" affiliate so our prices are nothing special. The only benefit is that we offer the same level of competence as dotster whom I have found to be very good. Which is why we signed into there affiliate programme.

Thats so much for posting that.

I bought a .eu domain last year, and my details were shown in it so and the people I registered it on wanted £20 to remove them. So I emailed the governing body for .eu domains and I got an email saying its removed, and now only my email address is showing, not even my name! All for free, no questions asked!

Note to self: Before doing anything web wise, consult with Admin first to make sure he doesn't offer something better.

What do you mean by 'governing body'?
Mike

The big boys who deal with the domains.

There thes one that have the final say on things like, oh www.myfreeforum.eu is getting removed on the grounds of x, or www.google.eu isnt being allowed to anyone etc...
