|
|
I am sure some people are eagerly awaiting more on the portal.
As you will know it has been on hold for almost two weeks, the last update was May 30th.
This was for the very worthwhile reason that moving all of our forums over to our shiney new server was a much higher priority.
Now that is done there are a few more little things to attend to, not least a little time off and then we will be back in action.
My thought is that allowing people to select post types.
Normal
Sticky
Announcement
Global Announcement
Portal Frontpage
Portal Editors Choice
Portal Archive
Portal Top
Is the key to the next stage. Post type are going to be a driving force in how people use the portal.
I'd hope for a Saturday release on this.

One point on this, the portal options will not appear when you post in an ordinary forum.
They will only appear if you edit a post.
We want to keep forum operation as easy as possible. _________________

What will
Portal Frontpage
Portal Top
Consist of, in terms of what we see in them? _________________ CALM TIME: When calm time is called, all posters in a topic must take time out to calm down.

Both will be pretty much like Editors choice, in fact identical really, just ways of categorising groups of articles. _________________

Global announcement has been coded, and I have added:
top, editors choice, archive as portal options. I have dropped "frontpage" from this selection, even editors choice and top may be viewed as synomyns to achieve the same sort of thing.
Do we really need more concepts than "Latest, greatest, and archived"? if not then editors choice can also go. _________________

it is being tested.
Remember the other options are for the portal. To help you develop a web site along side the forum. _________________

I assume you mean how soon?
Maybe Saturday, maybe Sunday.
BUT
You have to think of these as ky foundation stones of a big project being eased into place. I'd sooner sit on this for a week or a month that realise that the approach is wrong when it is too late.
Lets everyone think glass half full! Here we are with the most powerful free forums system there is, about to see a large growth in that power, no question should be in anyones mind having seen our track record, that it all will happen, so we should all recognise that things needed to be paced correctly. _________________

How extensive are the website facilities likely to be? |
A good question, and one that is hard to answer. The core code allows for a lot of abilities you would see in a full blown system like Joomla. In fact in some ways more flexible as you may be able to define not just site content, but actual page templates in forum posts.
So at the very least you can create stylish "static" pages with a consistant look and feel defined by such templates.
Now you get to the "rub" of the matter, great static pages are half the battle, the other half is dynamic components. We have to recap the following components, done or almost there.
FRONTPAGE
TOP
POPULAR
LATEST
ARCHIVE
TOPPOSTERS
MAINMENU
LINKSMENU
CATEGORY
CATEGORIES
INDEX
CONTENT
RAWCONTENT
DESCRIPTION
All these are geared to either static pages, or to giving you the means of showing off your forums content in interesting ways.
A true Cms system would have dynamic non "forumy" components, such as:
CALENDER
GALLERY
RECIPE DATABASE
SHOPPING CART
and in fact a million other things. There are several ways we could go about making this possible, but there are a whole raft of issues to be considered.
I'm hoping people will grow with us on this one and always keep in mind that we are offerering more for free that anyone else and hence be happy with the bonus features and not expect all the possibilities to happen at once.
Just to give an example of an "issue", if we were to offer a shopping cart, then a forum would become commercial and hence be losing money if there was a problem with that shopping cart, now I know our support here is prompt and free, but do we want to be lumbered with that additional moral responsibility without charging?
